Selected Jew

Does anyone care to explain to me why Noam Chomsky -- who isn't even a practicing Jew (and who's said some particularly nasty things about Judaism) -- is the "Selected Jew"? The Christianity portal has St. Paul as the Selected Christian. Why in God's name do we have Chomsky instead of, say, Maimonides?

Question about this portal

I find the distinguishing of Chabad from Orthodox Judaism to be offensive. If you want to make different streams within Orthodoxy, that is one thing. To place Chabad outside of Orthodoxy shows a POV bias. 08:49, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

JE citations

I've been working on converting a lot of Jewish Encyclopedia articles to Wikipedia and I've developed what I think is a good citation format for the reference section that incorporates both the JE article itself and the sources for that article. For example:

My reasoning is that if you're going to take a public domain article wholesale from some source you should identify the sources cited in that article (saying "this article came from JE" when the article is a verbatim repetition of the JE text doesn't seem very helpful).

As the heading says, I moved {{Torah portion}} to Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion box. Reasoning:

• The template just transcludes content from Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion.
• The template should not be used in article space for a variety of reasons (it's constantly changing, it's unlikely to be directly relevant, etc). It belongs primarily within this Portal and on user pages.

The name is up for grabs. I haven't snapped links yet, so feel free to move it to a more suitable name if you feel it's necessary. If not, tel me and I'll start fixing the links in preparation for getting rid of the old name. Zetawoof^(ζ) 03:44, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Request info

I am working on the purgatory article, which includes the views of different faiths concerning purification of the soul after death and the efficacy of prayers for the dead. It has a section on "Judaism's view", but it is unsourced and I have no idea if the information is reliable or not. Ten Commandments article

The article makes little mention of the Jewish view except in the Jewish section. The summary should make mention in Hebrew they are called the 10 sayings and actually are made up of 13 commandments. Also the table is extremely misleading as it confuses our counting of the statements with the numbering of commandments. Anti-Semitism in 19th century England

Sorry if this is not the correct place to leave this, I could not find your noticeboard. I would be grateful if someone who knows more about these things than I take a look here [2] Where someone is arguing there was no anti-Semitism in 19th century Britain. As I understood and have read so much about the anti-Semitism of the time I believed this to be an accepted fact. I have given references to its existence in the article but I think the editor concerned would prefer to be told by someone more knowledgable than me. Thanks. Nonsense alien articles

I've been researching certain Torah names on wikipedia, but I've found quite a bit of junk about references to aliens. As most Jews and Christians do not believe the Torah refers to aliens, ever this gives the articles a seriously loopsided content. Need Guidance on a Monster I set loose

I've created a monster, unintentionally, and I need some more experienced guidance to straighten it out:

Some time ago I created a comparison Glossary of Christian, Jewish, and Messianic terms. The idea was to show the normative terms, and the Messianic switched terms (Jewish terms with Christian meanings) side by side. In the beginning it also had a disambiguation column to suggest a non-confusing term for Wikipedia editors.

Well, it was a table and each religious POV was clearly distinct.

After the first AfD it lost the disambiguation column. So far, not great, but not horrific either.

After the second AfD it lost the Messianic column – AND the tabular structure.

Just losing the Messianic column would have been… not great, but not horrific.

Now, however, the Jewish and Christian terms are mashed together into a single list: Glossary of Jewish and Christian terms.

I don’t wish any editors ill will here. The problem is an artifact of my initial creation, so I’ll take the blame for it. But now I need help figuring out how to fix it. I’ve tried to communicate this to the other editors, and apparently do not know how to communicate this point:

Having a single Glossary of Jewish and Christian terms together really swallows Judaism up into Christianity. The mish mash becomes Messianic if anything else.

I feel like I’ve created a problem, and I feel responsible. The Glossary really needs to be split into two glossaries, if kept at all this way. Can anyone offer me any suggestions? I'm willing to be told I'm wrong about my concern here.

I agree with Shemaya. Immediately below the template about all the religion portals, there should be an explanation about what is Judaism instead of what is Passover. Adding Links

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia and am trying to understand how Wikipedia works, without disrupting anything or stepping on any one’s toes. My revisions on several pages have been removed and I am confused by these edits because I was not trying to self promote with my additions. Rather, I was adding a link to the Jewish Publication Society (JPS), the oldest Jewish publishing company in the United States and the authoritative English translation of the Jewish Bible. JPS has created a product called the Tagged Tanakh, which contains an online version of its most recent Bible translation.

You removed my links to the Tagged Tanakh, but Mechon Mamre, Bible Gateway, and the University of Michigan all have links in similar formats on Wikiperida pages related to the Bible. Please explain to me why these organizations are allowed to post and I am not. Additionally, I find it a little bothersome that Christian versions of the Bible (ie Bible Gateway and University of Michigan) are adding links to Jewish Wikipedia pages such as Torah and the Book of Genesis. The featured picture, article, quote, and the "did you know..." section should be changed on or around the following days to insure readers see new information:

Weekly Torah portion

There are a few problems with this section:

• Way too long. I think we should have just a paragraph or two of summary, followed by the following: For more information, read the complete article here.
• The line beginning "The weekly portion..." is an unruly mixture of blue and green. Unless it has some deep significance (Herod's renovation of the Second Temple?) I think it should be one solid color.
• The list of commentaries is quite long. I think it should be placed into two left-aligned columns to save space.

A few other concerns

• Perhaps I'm alone in this, but having an Infobox for the Did you know? section seems a little unexciting. Infoboxes are long lists of information that can be useful if someone's looking for it, but otherwise very dry. A Did you know section should be engaging. Thoughts?
• What exactly are the criteria for the "Featured article" section? The current one (Trembling before God) isn't even in the WikiProject! I think the only articles to be included should be those rated FA, A, or GA, and which are part of WP:WikiProject Judaism.

I tend to agree that some sort of regularly rotating DYK section, maybe with only a few short summary statements relating to individual articles of specific high importance to the topic, might be the best way to go. It would also be one way to help include in some way some of the articles of significant importance to the topic but not currently at a particularly high level of quality in the portal in some way. This portal currently includes a section providing a summary of the weekly Torah portion read in synagogues. As is, this section currently takes up a large amount of space, and may not be interesting to all readers.

• Option 1: Keep as is.
• Option 2: Abridge greatly.
• Option 3: Eliminate.
• Option 4: Create a separate subpage of the portal, and move the material there

And, of course, it is, more or less, our objective that all of our material be improved to the highest quality, which in general means promoted to Featured status. Therefore, I would have to say that keeping this section in the way it is currently included is more or less directly contrary to those objectives. The material might be acceptable for inclusion in some alternate form of the portal, but its current means of inclusion is almost certainly going to prevent the portal ever achieving wikipedia's goal of bringing it to the highest level of quality, as such things are determined with portals. One way to interpret this is that no consensus has emerged, so keep Option 1, which is the status quo. Option 1 also has a plurality. Nobody else agreed with John Carter's point that the portal should strive to be of featured quality. It should be noted that the Hebrew version of the portal (see interwiki links) does not contain a long section on the weekly Torah portion, so it is not necessary; however, it does add some value, especially because it changes from week to week, thus giving some readers an incentive to return to this page from time to time.

I agree that the Torah portion description is disproportionately long, but it is not a good use of anyone's time to shorten it. Perhaps someone can come up with readership statistics, but Portals generally get low readership, and reduing the length of the Torah portion summary would have a very low impact.

I am disclosing here that I am Jewish and I am familiar with the weekly Torah portions. However, I don't think that my personal experience colors my neutrality in closing this discussion to maintain the status quo. Chutznik (talk) 18:56, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Holidays

Continuing from the discussion about including holidays, it seems that no-one has yet opposed to the idea. Now implementation needs to be worked out.

The three ideas I mentioned were:

1. Replace the Star of David in the intro with a picture relevant to the given holiday, which will link to the article about that holiday. A caption could be added if desired.
2. Have a simple banner across the very top, as shown. The date could be added.
   Today is Yom Kippur.
3. Below the intro, provide a full paragraph or two explaining the holiday, similar to the Selected Article.

These were meant to be mutually exclusive; however, we can certainly do two or three of these (although it may get a little overwhelming).

We also need to determine what qualifies for a mention. Do we include Tu B'av, Yom Kippur Katan, Ta'anit Bekhorot, and other really minor days, or do we limit to the main holidays? Also, should we include the Israeli days of Yom Ha'atzmaut, Yom Yerushalayim, Yom Hazikaron, and Yom Hashoah?

Any sense how active he is?

14:00 UTC seems like an odd time to me. In context:

1. Shabbat is surely completely over by then throughout Australia and New Zealand. If the issue is about editors coming back on line after Shabbat, some Australians and New Zealanders would still see the old parsha right after Shabbat, but most others would see the new parsha on returning to the web after Shabbat.
2. By 14:00 UTC, the parsha has surely been read throughout Europe and Israel, but has mostly not been read yet in North America.

Parshat Hashavua section

Perhaps someone who regularly works with this would like to take a look at my sandbox. I've made some coding tests that I think would simplify this a lot, and would allow us to address situations where the parsha in Israel and the parsha in the Diaspora are different.

1. See at User:StevenJ81/sandbox/testpage. I assume that the various pages called {{Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion/xxx}} are not likely to be looked at except to the extent that they transclude to the portal. People otherwise looking for information on the parsha will go to the mainspace article on the parsha. Accordingly, it's reasonable to incorporate the coding that I have illustrated on this page. By using this coding, the page will always transclude into the Portal main page with the current week's Shabbat dates showing. (Possibly one will need to refresh the cached version.) As things stand now, the weekly portion subpages are edited every single year. With this coding, one more round of editing through the cycle will fix those permanently.

   I don't see an easy way to automate the main template ({{Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion}}), but editing only that every year or so is much easier than editing every parsha subpage every year.

2. I would propose that the main template could be edited so that in a week like this one it could read
   
   |17 = {{Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion/Pesach Day VIII|chutz=chutz}}{{Portal:Judaism/Weekly Torah portion/WTpI|Acharei}}
   
   That would give the result that you see in my sandbox—namely, that it adds a reference within the parsha subpage for the Diaspora that it is the parsha only in the Diaspora, plus adds a footer below pointing one to the correct parsha subpage for Israel. (Then, when that one is called, one still gets the correct dates, due to #1 above.)

Mixtures of milk and meat (Hebrew: בשר בחלב, basar bechalav, literally "meat in milk") are prohibited according to Jewish law. This dietary law, basic to kashrut, is based on two verses in the Book of Exodus, which forbid "boiling a (kid) goat in its mother's milk" and a third repetition of this prohibition in Deuteronomy. Some claim the Biblical statement was referring to sebum (חֵלֶב) and not milk (חָלָב).

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

I am currently cleaning this category of articles about people whose "criticism" is actually just hate, viz. antisemites - and of other articles that do not mention any such criticism. (That category was added to a lot of articles by an IP a few years ago.) I have done so for the letters A to E, but I may have given some of the remaining ones too much benefit of the doubt.
