SK23 is the working title of an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller film[2] written and directed by AR Murugadoss, and produced by N. V. Prasad under Sri Lakshmi Movies. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role alongside Rukmini Vasanth and Biju Menon.

Initially, Murugadoss was brought on board to direct a venture starring Vijay, but he was subsequently ousted and began working on the same project with Sivakarthikeyan instead. The film was announced in September 2023 under the tentative title #SK23, as it is Sivakarthikeyan's 23rd film in the lead role. Principal photography commenced in February 2024. It is currently being shot spoardically in several legs, with filming locations including Chennai. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander who is collaborating with Sivakarthikeyan for the 8th time and with AR Muragadoss fir the 3rd time, cinematography handled by Sudeep Elamon and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad.

A. R. Murugadoss (L) was initially signed to direct Vijay (R), in his fourth collaboration with the actor after Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014) and Sarkar (2018). However, he was ousted and subsequently replaced.

In March 2020, director AR Murugadoss, who had previously collaborated with Vijay for three films, was reported to join hands with the latter for the fourth time. Sun Pictures, headed by Kalanithi Maran, would reportedly fund the venture, while it marks as the reunion of Murugadoss and Vijay after Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014) and Sarkar (2018).[3] Tentatively titled Thalapathy 65, music composer Thaman S was reportedly approached to score the music, in his first collaboration with Vijay and Murugadoss.[4][5] On 24 August, Murugadoss confirmed the reunion with the actor, and dismissed the rumours of the film being a sequel to one of their (Murugadoss and Vijay) previous projects.[6][7] In October, however, it was reported that the actor had opted out from the venture, due to a conflict between the director and the production house, about cutting Murugadoss' salary due to the failure of his previous film, Darbar (2020).[8] On 10 December, the production house announced that director Nelson Dilipkumar had replaced Murugadoss. The film eventually became Beast (2022).[9][10]

That year, in late December, Murugadoss reportedly met Sivakarthikeyan and discussed a story. Sources speculated that the story, that they discussed about, was the same as Murugadoss narrated to Vijay.[11] The production was reported to begin after Sivakarthikeyan finishes his prior commitments, which included Don (2022), Maaveeran (2023), the highly-delayed Ayalaan (2024), and Amaran.[12] In January 2023, it was speculated by reports that production would begin that year.[13] During Murugadoss' production venture 16 August 1947 (2023)'s audio launch, Sivakarthikeyan, who was invited as a chief guest, hinted about his collaboration with director.[14] That March, Murugadoss confirmed the project, tentatively titled SK23.[15] The project is funded by N. V. Prasad under Sri Lakshmi Movies. It marks as their debut Tamil production venture, as the production house mainly produces films in Telugu cinema.[16] The company made a public announcement on 25 September, coinciding the occasion of Murugadoss' birthday, confirming the project.[17]

Pre-production[edit]

The project marks Sivakarthikeyan and Murugadoss's second collaboration together, after Sivakarthikeyan entered Tamil cinema in 2012 with Marina, as Murugadoss previously worked as producer and co-writer in the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Maan Karate (2014). But before the actor entered the industry, he worked as a host for Murugadoss' directorial film 7aum Arivu at its audio launch event in 2011 and the director's production venture Engaeyum Eppothum at a same type event in the same year.[18] A muhurat puja was held at a studio in Chennai on 6 February 2024 with the presence of the film's cast and crew.[19][20]

Sudeep Elamon, who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema, was announced as cinematographer, marking his first film in Tamil cinema.[21] Anirudh Ravichander would score the music, in his second consecutive film with the director after Darbar (2020).[22] Murugadoss further retained editor A. Sreekar Prasad, stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan and art director Arun Venjaramoodu.[23] Sivakarthikeyan went through a workshop with acting coach Rajesh Balachandiran to change his body-language.[24][25] Reportedly made with a production budget of ₹150–200 crore, Sivakarthikeyan and Murugadoss's remuneration are reported to be ₹40 crore respectively.[1]

Casting[edit]

Rukmini Vasanth was cast as the lead actress, in her second Tamil film after VJS 51.[26] Vidyut Jammwal, who played the main antagonist in Murugadoss' directorial Thuppakki, and Mohanlal were reported to play important roles in the film.[27] In late April 2024, Malayalam actor Biju Menon revealed he would play an important role, marking his return to Tamil cinema after Porkkalam (2010).[28]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on 14 February in Chennai.[29] The second schedule began on 13 March in Pondicherry.[30]

The music and background score is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, in his third collaboration with Murugadoss after Kaththi (2014) and Darbar (2020); eighth with Sivakarthikeyan.[15][a]
