Sunil Karkera

Sunil Karkera is an Indian-origin designer, engineer and entrepreneur based in California, USA. He is the CEO of BORN Group, a Tech Mahindra Company.[1] Previously, he has led strategic design at IT giants TCS Interactive and Wipro's Designit.

Early life[edit]

Karkera graduated with a degree in computer science from Mangalore University.[2]

Career[edit]

In 1995, Sunil Karkera joined Lockheed Martin as an embedded systems engineer. He subsequently joined SonicWALL and Fox Interactive Media. In 2007, Karkera co-founded Registria, an on demand registration platform, and served as the CTO.[1][3] The company was later acquired by Housatonic Partners.[4]

In 2015, he earned a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Arts, Zurich. He then served as the Global Head of TCS Interactive.[5] Karkera led strategic design and innovation at TCS. Under his leadership, TCS Interactive acquired London based design firm W12 Studios in 2018.[6]

In 2020, Karkera left TCS Interactive to Join Wipro as the Global Managing Director of Designit.[7][8] From Designit, Karkera Joined the Plus Company serving as President of both Fuseproject and Plus Digital.

In 2023, Karkera took over as CEO of BORN Group, a Tech Mahindra-owned digital agency, from the founder Dilip Keshu. He now also heads the design division within Tech Mahindra.[9]

Accolades & Achievements[edit]

  • Under his leadership, TCS Interactive won the Red Dot Award in 2019 for best brand and communication design.[10]
  • During Karkera's tenure as Global Managing Director, Designit won the Red Dot Award for brand and communication Design in 2021.[11]
  • Fuseproject is the product design firm that developed the acclaimed Ocean Cleanup sunglasses. These were developed in collaboration with the non-profit organization The Ocean Cleanup, using waste cleaned from the ocean.[12]
