rollout schedule[edit]

The decision on this should have been made nearly a year ago, any information on montenegro? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.243.71.250 (talkcontribs).

The IANA/ICANN procedures take a fair bit of time to get implemented. I'm guessing that the delegation will be done on one of the 2007 meetings. --Joy [shallot] 23:25, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The rollout schedule to deploy .me is up on the domain.me registry site now. I'd tried adding the info to the article, but it has since been reverted. --66.102.80.212 (talk) 19:39, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

.yu will be replaced by .me[edit]

Heh, this makes me laugh. This one is .me, and there's a related one called .yu. Heh. (I bet that the .me TLD will be used for things like personal space, i.e. MySpace, etc.) — SheeEttin {T/C} 01:51, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is that any more silly than creating .me.us as a name? Me? Us??? --205.150.76.42 22:35, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but I found this statement (which I may have missed before) even funnier: "This allows a two-year transition period for existing .yu names to be transferred to .me". — SheeEttin {T/C} 20:37, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
.its.me as a hierarchy for personal websites? *lol* that should be added to domain hacks and uncyclopedia's list of joke domains, that's classic. :) --205.150.76.42 14:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The whole saga of .me obtaining independence from .yu does make for some awkward grammatical constructions, much like the infamous "I is..." (technically valid in the one context "I is the 9th letter of the alphabet..."). Somehow ".me is the domain for Montenegro" looks less valid than the passive voice "Montenegro is served by .me, a country-code top level domain" even though both are technically correct in this context. --carlb 04:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

".ME! I Disconnected from .YU!" :D 195.67.149.160 (talk) 07:19, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

.me is about YOU?[edit]

That's their official slogan. Perhaps this has become silly enough that the entire .me domain should be transwikied to http://bjaodn.org? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.102.80.212 (talk) 19:22, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You'd think that in the age of social media and personal activism, this domain would have become as hot as the .tv (Tuvalu) one. ;) 195.67.149.160 (talk) 07:15, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Active[edit]

.me is active! take a look at http://www.nic.me —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.130.126.242 (talk) 16:49, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As of 14:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC) it resolves but isn't taking new registrations yet. --205.150.76.42 14:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Registration opens for .me domains[edit]

ITNews reports that .me "is now available for general use" and that ICANN voted to "allow users to register whatever domain suffix they want for their site." Does that mean that Montenegro has lost or will lose the .me domain, or does that merely mean that anyone can register a .me domain now? Invenio (talk) 04:57, 25 July 2008 (UTC) t c[reply]

.me has nothing to do with the "any letter combination TLDs." See Generic top-level domain#Unrestricted gTLDs. .me is now open to anyone. I bought two :) --Dan LeveilleTALK 08:02, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone? Even .me? --66.102.80.212 (talk) 21:55, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hi what about maine

History[edit]

I've rewritten the history of the allocation of .me - ICANN is not responsible for allocating new ccTLDs, as it just follows the ISO 3166-1 list, so the stuff about people asking ICANN for a particular TLD is meaningless. 81.142.107.230 (talk) 09:40, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use as Piracy safe haven?[edit]

Just wondering if it's worth noting in the article the fact that many sites that engage in piracy (demonoid.me, emuparadise.me, ect.) have been switching their domains over to .me from .com, presumably to escape possible U.S. crackdown. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.218.203.175 (talk) 12:52, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Any gTLD is 'piracy safe', it's the US governments pigheadedness that is disrupting what is a normally neutral system. 110.22.136.214 (talk) 06:18, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2-letter domain discrepency[edit]

The summary mentions 4 exceptions made for 2-letter domains: facebook (fb.me), yahoo (me.me), wordpress (wp.me) and godaddy (go.me).

In contrast, the Known Hacks section mentions there being 3 of them (omitting godaddy's go.me) stating that those 3 are the only ones.

The only explanation (other than a mistake/typo) is that the godaddy one was authorized by someone other than doMEn, which I find unlikely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DarwinSurvivor (talkcontribs) 09:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, all were granted as exceptions. It happens. 110.22.136.214 (talk) 06:18, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
GoDaddy coowns .me so they could have influenced it. Wikipedyst Talk to Wikipedyst 12:33, 14 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Who has operational control?[edit]

This article states

"The .me registry is operated by doMEn, which won a contract to do so after a bid process conducted by the government of Montenegro."

but Afilias says:

"Afilias Limited is ... a provider of domain name registry services for several countries around the world, including ... .ME (Montenegro) ... "

The context for this question is the following claim found on various websites. (None of them that I could find met Wikipedia's criteria for a reliable source, so consider the following as evidence that a claim was made, not as evidence that the claim is true.)

From [ http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-stop-domain-names-being-seized-by-the-us-government-110205/ ]:

"Avoid registering domains that are handled by VeriSign or Afilias. VeriSign operates .com, .net, .cc, .name and .tv while Afilias operates .info, .org, .mobi, .in, .me, .aero and more."

From [ http://domainincite.com/pirates-set-up-domain-seizure-workaround/ ]:

"Note also that the .me registry is managed by Afilias, a heavily US-based company,"

From [ https://airvpn.org/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=55&func=view&catid=3&id=852 ]:

"...VeriSign and Afilias (american companies which administer TLDs like .org, .net, .info and .com)..."

This is related to the large question of which top level domains are under the control of US corporations and thus subject to seizure by the US government. The claim is made that .BE, .DE, .NL, and .SH domains have been seized:

From: [ http://www.dotweekly.com/150-domains-now-seized-by-government-ice-broken-hearted/ ]:

"Here is the latest list of domain names according to the seizedservers.com DNS that I could find ... Q23.nl ... Schoor.be ... Trds.de "

From [ http://www.dotweekly.com/ukraine-saint-helena-domains-added-to-ice-seized-domain-list/ ]:

"Onsma.sh was added to the seizedserevers.com list. The .sh ccTLD is for the country of Saint Helena, which is an overseas territory of Great Britain."

Please note that my goal here is not to discuss the controversial subject of domain seizures, but rather to address wwether Wikipedaia's .me article should contain a paragraph (if true -- that hasn't been established yet) about it being under US operational control. --Guy Macon (talk) 23:32, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Afilias is certainly involved in running .me, but the registry is (officially at least) a Montenegrin company - their website describes them as "a Montenegrin joint venture (doing business as .ME Registry), whose partners include Afilias Limited, GoDaddy.com, Inc., and ME-net d.o.o."[1]. The DNS infrastructure for .me is operated by Afilias, but whether that means that the TLD is under US operational control is another matter - Afilias' HQ is in Dublin, and the whois records for the IP addresses of the .me nameservers show addresses in Montenegro (ns.nic.me & ns2.nic.me) and Canada (the afilias-nst.org & afilias-nst.info servers.)
If we're going to state that .me is under US operational control then we need to have reliable sources for that, and I would question whether even examples of .me domains having been seized by US authorities is enough (for example, a domain registered through a US registrar would probably be vulnerable to seizure regardless of how or where the registry is operated.) -- AJR | Talk 23:29, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did a search and could not find a reliable source. Everything I quoted above is a blog or an opinion piece, which is good enough for raising a question on talk but not even close to being good enough to use as a basis for editing the article. Unless someone comes up with something better, I am going to leave it at that; it is a widely held published belief that .ME is under US operational control, but there are no known reliable sources that would justify putting such a claim into any Wikipedia article. --Guy Macon (talk) 07:01, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Both GoDaddy and Afilias have equity in .me via the J.V. Domen. Corresponding sources can be found here [2] Wikipedyst Talk to Wikipedyst 12:31, 14 March 2014 (UTC).[reply]
