rollout schedule[edit]

The whole saga of .me obtaining independence from .yu does make for some awkward grammatical constructions, much like the infamous "I is..." (technically valid in the one context "I is the 9th letter of the alphabet..."). Somehow ".me is the domain for Montenegro" looks less valid than the passive voice "Montenegro is served by .me, a country-code top level domain" even though both are technically correct in this context. --carlb 04:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Registration opens for .me domains[edit]

ITNews reports that .me "is now available for general use" and that ICANN voted to "allow users to register whatever domain suffix they want for their site." Use as Piracy safe haven?[edit]

2-letter domain discrepency[edit]

The summary mentions 4 exceptions made for 2-letter domains: facebook (fb.me), yahoo (me.me), wordpress (wp.me) and godaddy (go.me).

In contrast, the Known Hacks section mentions there being 3 of them (omitting godaddy's go.me) stating that those 3 are the only ones.

Who has operational control?[edit]

This article states

"The .me registry is operated by doMEn, which won a contract to do so after a bid process conducted by the government of Montenegro."

but Afilias says:

"Afilias Limited is ... a provider of domain name registry services for several countries around the world, including ... .ME (Montenegro) ... "

The context for this question is the following claim found on various websites. (None of them that I could find met Wikipedia's criteria for a reliable source, so consider the following as evidence that a claim was made, not as evidence that the claim is true.)

This is related to the large question of which top level domains are under the control of US corporations and thus subject to seizure by the US government. The claim is made that .BE, .DE, .NL, and .SH domains have been seized:

Please note that my goal here is not to discuss the controversial subject of domain seizures, but rather to address wwether Wikipedaia's .me article should contain a paragraph (if true -- that hasn't been established yet) about it being under US operational control. --Guy Macon (talk) 23:32, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Afilias is certainly involved in running .me, but the registry is (officially at least) a Montenegrin company - their website describes them as "a Montenegrin joint venture (doing business as .ME Registry), whose partners include Afilias Limited, GoDaddy.com, Inc., and ME-net d.o.o."[1]. The DNS infrastructure for .me is operated by Afilias, but whether that means that the TLD is under US operational control is another matter - Afilias' HQ is in Dublin, and the whois records for the IP addresses of the .me nameservers show addresses in Montenegro (ns.nic.me & ns2.nic.me) and Canada (the afilias-nst.org & afilias-nst.info servers.)

If we're going to state that .me is under US operational control then we need to have reliable sources for that, and I would question whether even examples of .me domains having been seized by US authorities is enough (for example, a domain registered through a US registrar would probably be vulnerable to seizure regardless of how or where the registry is operated.) -- AJR | Talk 23:29, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did a search and could not find a reliable source. Everything I quoted above is a blog or an opinion piece, which is good enough for raising a question on talk but not even close to being good enough to use as a basis for editing the article. Unless someone comes up with something better, I am going to leave it at that; it is a widely ~~held~~ published belief that .ME is under US operational control, but there are no known reliable sources that would justify putting such a claim into any Wikipedia article. --Guy Macon (talk) 07:01, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
