3-litre engines[edit]

Who, if anyone, actually used 3-litre engines in this race? Climax never created one and the BRM wasn't raced until late in the 66 season. That leaves Ford or Maserati... It would be good to know, and worth noting in the article. 4u1e (talk) 06:18, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This Atlas F1 Bulletin Board thread indicates (in post #30) that Ireland used a 1930cc engine, and (in post #35) that Tingle, Serrurier and Holme had 2.7, 2.0 and 1.5 litre engines respectively. This other thread indicates (in post #1) that Brabham and de Klerk used 2.7 litre engines, (in posts #4, #8 and #12) that Hawkins had a 2.7 litre engine and (in post #12) that Love also had a 2.7 litre engine. So, no "proper" 3-litre engines at all. While you're correct that Climax never built a full 3-litre engine, there were numerous 4-cylinder 2.5 litre FPF units (as used in the Tasman Series and pre-1961 F1) around, many of them "stretched" to 2.7 litres. Good points. When I started the article I did wonder just what engines were being used but didn't delve very deeply into it. I assumed that some of the South Africans still had pre-1961 engines kicking around but I didn't know if they'd been modified in any way. I think Prophet's Maserati was a 2.5 (or in some sources a 1.5 but definitely not a 3.0). Whether or not any of the South Africans had ever used a 3.0 engine during their 1965 season, I don't know, but the rules apparently allowed for them.
