GDR visitors/Pan-European Picnic[edit]

Just as a historic sidenote: There were many visitors from East Germany who spent their summer vacation in Hungary and used the opportunity to be spectators of this event. At this time, the Pan-European Picnic was just a few days away, scheduled for August 19. So lots of German-language leaflets were spread among those East German visitors of the race with many of them then taking part in the picnic and crossing the border to Austria. It was the beginning of the end of the communist rule in the GDR as this triggered more and more East Germans to escape to the the West via Hungary and then the German embassy in Prague.
