Knighted[edit]

Persons which receive a knightly honour are only allowed the title "Sir" or "Lady" when they are actually knighted, i.e. when they received the insignia and the accolade from The Queen (or in name of the queen). However in the New Year Honours 2010 in the London Gazette it is only mentioned that "The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify her intention of conferring the Honour of Knighthood". This means only that she has the intention of conferring a knighthood, not that she already actually has awarded already. Did the mentioned persons already received the accolade, are they now indeed knighted? Only then they are allowed to use the title Sir or Lady, not earlier. Well, I already did find out that the confering of the knighthoods not already took place, so although the mentioned persons will receive the honour they aren't yet knighted. The accolade will take place in february at the earliest. See by the way an example of Paul McCartney; the London Gazette with the New Year honours list 1996 that the queen has the intention of conferring the Honour of Knighthood to him: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/54625/pages/1. The London Gazette with the information that he is indeed knighted on 11th March 2007: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/55229/pages/8993. For most purposes they can use the title straight away sometimes the actual ceremonies for all the awards can take a few months. Your logic would apply to all the awards in the list all of which are presented later in the year by the Queen. I dont think removing the titles from articles would serve any purpose other than to start edit wars. MilborneOne (talk) 14:07, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with MilborneOne You are incorrect to say that titles can't be used before the investiture. See Debretts [1]:

An honour may be used from the moment it has been announced in the Press. There is no need to wait until the recipient has received the accolade or been invested.
