Merge discussion (2016)[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of the discussion was: Snowball - Do not merge

The page 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals is a sub page of 2016 Copa Sudamericana and is only about the finals, that have been cancelled. As a result most of the content of 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals is from 2016 Copa Sudamericana. The only notable info that is different (see below) can be put in the main page. All the other information is there already.

CONMEBOL immediately suspended all activities, including the scheduled finals matches.[1] In light of these events, Atlético Nacional requested that CONMEBOL award the title to Chapecoense.[2] Atlético Nacional invited fans to the Estadio Atanasio Girardot dressed in white with candles at the scheduled time of the first leg of the finals, to pay tribute in memory to the victims of the crash.[3][4] A vigil was held on the same night at Chapecoense's stadium, the Arena Condá.[5][6]

  • Note the recently closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals, started by merge nominator yesterday. None of the ten commenters there suggested anything like "merge" or "redirect" (which happens often enough at AfD). Fram (talk) 10:24, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Reply to note All replies said that the finals are notable, yes I agree, but's already covered at the main page. Smartyllama (talk · contribs) wrote As the FInals of a major tournament, they satisfy WP:NFOOTY and WP:SPORTSEVENT even if they were cancelled. See also 1946 FIFA World Cup, which was cancelled as well, but there was enough in reliable sources and notable enough to write an article about it. So the fact that it was (maybe) ultimately cancelled is irrelevant. If it satisfied notability before it was cancelled, it still does. Well bad example as 1946 FIFA World Cup is a redirect, but I would believe it can become an article, but there would never be the article 1946 FIFA World Cup final.
  • Don't merge - This request is too soon. This is an ongoing event. Let's see what happens with regards to the awarding of the trophy, the participation of the winners in next year's Libertadores etc etc. If in the fullness of time there's not enough content to warrant the separate article, then we can merge. --Super Nintendo Chalmers (talk) 12:17, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge - as per Super Nintendo Chalmers -- Rubyaxles (talk) 04:31, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge - let's wait to see how things unfold. I don't understand the urgency of trying to close this page. ComputerJA () 04:47, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge - The decision at AFD was very clear. Agathoclea (talk) 08:32, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge - The AfD result was very clear. Nobody supported merge or redirect. Smartyllama (talk) 14:53, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't merge - Every single finals have a page and this one shouldn't be different, specially considering the issue with the plane crash. Obviously more info will be added regarding CONMEBOL's decision and people in the future might look for that specific article to understand more of the context, instead of just the whole tournament page. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:37, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I think consensus is clear here between this and the AfD. Can we close this so we can remove that notice from a very visible page? Smartyllama (talk) 13:40, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
