A candidate is a candidate. The voting people of the city of Toronto are the collective electors… not the campaign managers… not the press reps.. not the sponsors … not the campaign donors … the people of Toronto … the everyday working mothers and fathers … struggling to raise families in the six .. the people who have migrated to Canada to build a Canadian Dream ,after fleeing their dictatorship led , often war torn , poverty-stricken native countries… the fact is … statistics canada-proven fact … is the Minority is the Majority … candidate is candidate and inclusion is inclusion. unless the City of #Toronto is looking to lead the conversation of the nation by distorting political consciousness and collective awareness by setting a tone dictatorship and communism in Canada by way of censorship, here one Wikipedia page, that in itself would be reflective of what is being intended for mainstream media . It’s only right to list all facts , I. This case all candidates, period … the whole story does not equate to a quarter -truth MadamXMedia111 (talk) 23:37, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

To quote Ivanvector (talk · contribs) in the 2018 Toronto mayoral election talk page - A particular candidate's prominence in the article (including their presence in the infobox) is determined by their real-life prominence in reliable sources, as it has always been. @Turini2 To quote Elections Canada on the Electoral System of Canada, Pillars of Electoral Democracy, "Democracy is much more than holding elections; however, free and fair elections are one of its fundamental conditions.

Major Candidate[edit]

Seems too subjective a category for an encyclopedia. Why not let the lack of a wiki bio speak for itself? 2607:FEA8:1061:9230:28E5:D56F:4802:56BF (talk) 20:08, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

because there are candidates who are wikipedia notable, but are not major candidates (i.e. no hope of winning). See the point above from Ivanvector in 2018. Turini2 (talk) 20:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Still subjective. Who decides? 2607:FEA8:1061:9230:30A6:85B1:D443:7E53 (talk) 02:48, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We do, through Consensus. And at present, the consensus is the above. Turini2 (talk) 09:29, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Colonial. The article reads like an ad for John Tory. 2607:FEA8:1061:9230:1838:25DA:4E38:2C (talk) 16:11, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
1) please be Civil, regardless of your opinion 2) the John Tory points are merely factual (his business/political history) 3) when another major candidate joins the race, they'll be added - just like Keesmaat is in 2018 Toronto mayoral election (or others in historic races) Turini2 (talk) 18:16, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hiyournameis I guess we wait for a poll that shows one of them with a reasonable percentage! (i.e. Faith Goldy has a wikipedia page - but she had no hope of winning and came a very distant 3rd place with 3% of the vote) Turini2 (talk) 08:39, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MadamXMedia111 So at present - the page lists all candidates running for election in an identical way. There is no "major candidate" listed at this time. As I stated below, "if you wish to have details on candidates, we need to treat them all fairly. Perhaps 1 line per candidate would be okay, not paragraphs - and certainly not only writing about only a few candidates."
Please seek consensus for any edits that you make. Turini2 (talk) 14:24, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your input @Turini2 For the record, my intention was/is to list the source-supported findings of all 30 Toronto Mayoral elects running in the 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election. Accordingly, and for the record, on or about Wednesday the 5th day of October, 2022, at approximately ten-thirty in the evening (aka 22:30 in military form) Canadian Mountain Time, I, MadamXMedia111 (previous wikipedia Real2Reel) (legally known as Michele Fralick -- formerly of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; formerly of West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA; formerly of Tampa Bay, Florida, USA; formerly of Grand Junction, Colorado; formerly of Brooklyn, New York City, USA (Brackley, Esq.); formerly of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada), entered several contributions to the page 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election including, but not limited to listing the names of 2022 Mayoral candidate (according to https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/candidate-list/). The names of the said candidates reported to be running in the 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election entered by me/myself/I/her/she MadamXMedia111 were those noted registered on May 2nd, 2022 (the first day of registration), according to Toronto.ca. The list of names were entered in alphabetic order. They are 1. Acton, Blake 2. Luk,Tony 3. Schwartz 4. Tull, Reginald. In an effort to uphold a fair and balanced presentation of the information entered, I also provided the respective relevant findings / body of works / facts of public interest which are associated with each of the respective names.
Here's what that looked like:
May 2nd, 2022 Toronto Mayoral-Elect Nominations
On May 2, 2022, the date of Mayor John Tory's official bid for re-election, four candidates were officially nominated Mayoral-elects in the 2022 race for Mayor of Toronto[10] Listed in alphabetical order, the candidates nominated, along with the Tory's official re-run, on the first day of registration are Mayoral- elects Blake Acton (https://voteacton.com/),[11]Tony L uk (https://www.votetonyluk.ca/en_CA/),[12] Kyle Schwartz (https://kyleschwartz.ca/)[13] and Reginald Tull (https://tullformayor.ca/).[14]
May 2nd, 2022 Toronto Mayoral-Elect Nominations
Toronto Mayoral-Elect Blake Acton, a veteran police officer who served for over 30 years, some of which as a police constable for the Toronto Police Service.[15] Acton's campaign message, "There is an alternative john Tory. You have a choice."[16]
Toronto Mayoral-Elect Tony Luk,[17] a Chinese-Canadian[18] returning political figure who previously ran for city councillor in the Scarborough-Agincourt Ward 22’s 2021 by-election, marking fifth place in the race with 848 votes.[19] Luk's municipal campaign is reported to be focused on trade relations between China and Canada.[20]
Toronto Mayoral-Elect Kyle Schwartz is a reported student at York University. Not only is there no official campaign website for the Kyle Schwartz 2022 Candidate for Mayor of Toronto, there are few reports on the candidate and politically relevant details on Kyle Schwartz appear to be unavailable.[21]
Toronto Mayoral-Elect Reginald Tull.[22] a Toronto-native reported to uphold strong ties with the community,[23] with a recorded history of volunteer service as an Ontario Prison Minister,[24]and author of a book publication titled Memoirs of a Bad Boy: A true story of a young man's struggles, incarceration, and redemption[25] "My first priority is to keep the city safe from gun violence. I will create an anonymous gun buyback program and have more undercover cops on the streets gathering intelligence to identify gun dealers," noted by Toronto Public Library as Responses by Reginald Tull. "My Plastic to Fuel Initiative will
create 30,000 jobs in the city, reduce trash and pollution, and allow for a two year freeze on property tax increase."[26]
I had the intent to return to the page and continue the profile of candidates, by date of nomination (May 11, 2022); (May 13th, 2022), (June 6th, 2022) ... and so on, and so forth ... through till August 19th, 2022 ... until each candidate was rightfully profiled for their respective role in the 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election.
Not However, within 24 hours of noted contributions being entered, upon my return to the page 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election, I witnessed that all of the data, sources, citations, which I carefully gathered and thoughtfully composed for entry to the 2022 Toronto Mayoral Election was deleted. No talk. No discussion. brazenly erased relevant information. For the record, not only does this hold up the rightful documentation process ... brings the page back to presenting biased view of and event meant to exercise a fair and balance democratic electorl,a process MadamXMedia111 (talk) 21:26, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MadamXMedia111 (your edits are still in the page history, they are not "brazenly erased". I recommend reading the edit summary for why information was removed)
The page as of now is factual - it just lists the candidates. I appreciate you wish to provide information about candidates - but if there's no information on a candidate (e.g. Kyle Schwartz) we can't include it, as it fails Wikipedia:Verifiability. As I stated below, something like one or two lines about them, from a range of sources is fine. Paragraphs would be excessive.
(A side note - keep your comments short and to the point. Editors see a big wall of text like you have left above and think "This is too long; I won't read it". It can also be seen as disruptive by some editors (Wikipedia:Wall of text))
(Also that's a lot of personal information about yourself - putting that amount of information on the internet can sometimes be a bad idea (doxing)) Turini2 (talk) 21:38, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Turin2 I tell the truth. GOD is in control. What is a bad idea is thinking we / you. them. they ... any thing other than GOD is in control, period. The truth is the turht. fact is fact. Let us take heed to Elections Canada “promise” on the Pillars of Electoral Democracy, promise for a voting process that presents We The People with “free and fair elections” … citing this promise of just-balance and transparency as “one of its fundamental conditions”.

I feel like Tory is the only major candidate right now. Until polling comes out it's hard to see any of the other candidates being a challenge to the incumbent. Picard102 (talk) 03:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Candidates attending the mayoral debate on 17 October should be considered major candidates. This includes Sarah Climenhaga, Chloe Brown, Stephen Punwasi, John Tory and Gil Peñalosa. Here is a link to the event: https://bot.com/Events/Toronto-Mayoral-Debate-2022. The infobox on the top right[edit]

Out of curiosity...how come only John Tory and Gil Peñalosa are the only candidates there and not the others? No photo available? MiroslavGlavic (talk) 01:42, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Those are the only two major candidates running, that's why. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:28, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MiroslavGlavic the discussion above gives more info on this! :) Turini2 (talk) 08:06, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity. Last election there were 2 "major" Mayoral candidates. Before that one election had 6 and so forth.
Why only include major Mayor candidates? who decides who is a major candidate? MiroslavGlavic (talk) 02:42, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MiroslavGlavic As above - we do, through consensus. For a start, only 2 of the candidates are wikipedia notable at present. Maybe they'll be more. When polling starts coming out, that will also help us to decide. We want candidates that have a hope in winning the election, not no hopers.
In 2018, the 3rd place person got 3% of the vote compared to 69% and 23%. In 2014, the top three candidates got 40%, 33% and 23%, while the 4th place person got 0.4%. In 2010, the top three candidates got 47%, 35% and 11%, while the 4th place person got 0.6%. In all these examples, it's pretty clear who was (and wasn't!) a major candidate. Turini2 (talk) 07:27, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MiroslavGlavic The infobox can only hold 9 places, so we have to draw the line somewhere, considering there are often dozens of candidates running for mayor. -- Earl Andrew - talk 13:42, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of Stephen Punwasi into the main infobox[edit]

I just found out I was pinged . I am just wondering if Stephen Punwasi should be included in main infobox. I only hyperlinked his name in the box of 'Full list of registered candidates' because I didn't know if he would be considered a "major candidate". He has a wikipage but isn't generate much interest from major outlets such as the Toronto Star. Any thoughts? Hiyournameis (talk) 23:29, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If the media isn't treating him as a major candidate, he should be dropped.-- Earl Andrew - talk 12:32, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is the Star treating anyone as a major candidate other than the incumbent? 64.7.154.235 (talk) 00:31, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BudPenguin No issue with adding Punwasi as a major candidate if there's sources for him being so. The Global source simply lists a number of candidates (and their proposals) without making claims regarding candidate status, and the Hub (unaware of its quality as a source) states "John Tory is facing challenges from Gil Peñalosa [...] and Stephen Punwasi".
Your addition reads "His last minute announcement to run made him one of two high profile candidates to challenge Tory, according to media." None of the sources seem to back this bit up, so I will remove it for now - while leaving Punwasi present (pending other people's thoughts on this).
An election poll would help! Turini2 (talk) 21:36, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sportsfan 1234 would value your thoughts on the above, given the sources provided. Turini2 (talk) 18:11, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Under "Major candidates", Penalosa should be listed second as per alphabetical order and I don't think Punwasi should be listed at all. The Global News site discussed a dozen candidates and doesn't identify Punwasi as "major" and the "deep dive" and "hub" are not prominent media. 199.119.233.176 (talk) 09:08, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please change the spelling of Gil Penalosa to Gil Peñalosa, with an accent over the n. The Starlost (talk) 21:38, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@The Starlost: both his official website (https://www.gpenalosa.ca/) and his campaign site (https://www.gilformayor.ca/) have the name written with N. I agree that the name is written with Ñ in Spanish, but he may have changed it when he relocated to Canada, so we have to go with what the sources say. –FlyingAce✈hello 21:50, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MadamXMedia111 edits[edit]

@MadamXMedia111 Hello, please seek consensus for your edits - they've now been reverted twice. What are you seeking to achieve with your edits? The lead doesn't need expanding, personally - it's factual and to the point at present. If you wish to have details on candidates, we need to treat them all fairly. Perhaps 1 line per candidate would be okay, not paragraphs - and certainly not only writing about only a few candidates. Turini2 (talk) 09:00, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at 2014 Toronto mayoral election in the registered candidates section - they've got one or two lines about them, from a range of sources. That's the thing that would be useful to have - paragraphs of text is excessive. Turini2 (talk) 14:30, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Endorsements[edit]

The 2014 and 2018 election pages both have an endorsements section, I believe at this point in the campaign there have been enough endorsements (from both former and current politicians) to warrant a section for this page. 45.72.214.210 (talk) 17:19, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Change "Graduate and researcher from the University of Toronto." to "Enterprise Project Manager at Environics Analytics, a data and analytics company. He is also a graduate and researcher from the University of Toronto."

Source: https://thelocal.to/mayoral-candidates-toronto-2022-elections/ Soaad Hossain (talk) 15:27, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Soaad Hossain I don't wish to give undue prominence to a particular company, and the job title isn't important. (for example, another candidate is listed as working in the financial industry - not the specific company). How about -
"Works at a data and analytics company, former graduate and researcher at the University of Toronto." Turini2 (talk) 07:38, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Soaad Hossain As you may be (or working for) the candidate - you need to follow the instructions in Wikipedia:DISCLOSE to declare your conflict of interest. Turini2 (talk) 07:42, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Turini2 The job title is important as it does influences how people see a person. Also, for many other candidates, their job title is displayed (some examples: one is listed as a criminal defense lawyer, another is listed as a financial analyst, and another is listed as an entrepreneur). It would be best if the change was "Works as an enterprise project manager at a data and analytics company, former graduate and researcher at the University of Toronto."

Inclusion of Chloe-Marie Brown into the main infobox[edit]

I was following her campaign but was still surprised with the level of support Chloe-Marie Brown received (6.31%). She had only a couple features in media outlets and was included in both debates that John Tory attended. The Star has a piece about her today. Looking back, the infobox for the 2003 Toronto municipal election previously featured John Nunziata, who finished with 5.3% of the vote. I believe that this level of support establishes her as a major candidate this election. Her performance campaigning and during the debates shifted the trajectory of the election, and she finished with a historically significant level of support in a low turnout election. Khaveman (talk) 17:26, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Her support does merit inclusion, and the only reason I excluded her was the fact she lacked a photo.-- Earl Andrew - talk 17:34, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
