Sources for gathering info for candidates[edit]

I'm curious if there are any standards on what sources to use when writing out descriptive blurbs for prospective candidates. Some candidates have social media and websites. So far, I've been sticking to official websites (e.g., the "About" page of the organization they work for) and news articles, but I'm wondering if I could expand this to include information candidates release themselves. Is it necessary for their claims to be vetted? (E.g., they say they are a banker and a journal article confirms it vs the candidate just listing "banker"). The style guide Wikipedia:Candidates and elections recommends limiting candidate info to politically relevant details. I don't think employment history is that relevant for this article. RobertShmurda (talk) 04:40, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Candidates and elections also has standards for what's an acceptable source for candidate info. It says "Campaign literature and websites may be used for some things; if an official campaign website says a candidate opposes abortion, you can say the candidate is against abortion. Be wary, though, that a candidate's own literature will leave significant gaps in information. It is no substitute for independent information"

I interpret this to mean that while a candidate's position on issues is fine to source from their websites/literature, its probably not a good replacement for media when it comes to candidate details RobertShmurda (talk) 04:44, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Format of this article[edit]

Clean up of candidate information[edit]

I'd like to clean up candidate information to be consistent with guidance from Wikipedia:Candidates and elections. From the style guide "Try to stay away from too much detail on the candidate's life outside of politics unless it is relevant to the election or otherwise noteworthy"

There's a lot of non-political detail on some candidates that borders on self promotion, both cited and non-cited

I'd support removing anything that isn't cited. Though as someone who intends to vote in an upcoming municipal election, information about where someone worked is pretty helpful! Looking at 2018 Toronto municipal election and 2022 Ottawa municipal election, I see that this typ information is included. I find it really useful to know where someone works and where someone volunteers since it reveals their interests. Some could definitely be trimmed since a few are longer than others. Some candidates definitely have a better web presence than others. Now that candidates are posting their platforms, we probably have a lot more to work with.
