Castleton[edit]

I do not wish to start an edit war. However, ALL of my recent mapping (several AA Road Atlases, recent OS sheet, www.getamap.co.uk, www.streetmap.co.uk, www.multimap.com, and of course, the signs on the ground) confirms that the road through Castleton is now the A6187.Richard B 20:33, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know the name is numbered A6187. It's not the point. The road is the A625. Just like declassified roads (the A40 for example) is still the A40. this is not a directory or roads it's a encyclopedia, even if a taskforce uses strict data, not all do. The spirit that counts so long as it's accurate. IF you want to be pedantic, you could say the A625 no longer reaches the A6 but just finishes at Calver... The point is: the road goes to Chapel/Frith even if the number's been reallocated.

Let's be clear about something. Most declassified roads do not retain the old road number. The only case where it would is if there is a concurrency. That is not the case here. Roads are most frequently renumbered when a bypass is built around a town/village. The old route loses it's old number, and is renumbered to something else, or even declassified. The new bypass becomes part of the route defined by the road number. The highways authority has completely re-routed part of the A625, so that it now no-longer runs through Castleton, instead heads south and terminates on the A623 at Calver. The road no-longer goes to Chapel-en-le-Frith. The A6187 at Castleton is no more the A625 than this street is part of the A34. Now, I'm not saying at all that we should ignore that the A625 used to run through Castleton and around Mam Tor, in fact, that's one of the most interesting aspects of this road. But we do also need to recognise that it has now been re-routed. If you believe otherwise, I'd like to see a citation. Richard B 00:19, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge of Hathersage Road (Sheffield) into this article[edit]

Hathersage Road does not appear to be notable enough for a separate article, also this article needs more content, so I have proposed a merge. Parts of the Hathersage Road (Sheffield) article are unclear, and may need to be rewritten. —Snigbrook 20:10, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mam Tor road[edit]

Was it built in 1819, or possibly finished then, following the 1809 Act, and was it the Sparrow Pit Trustees, or the Sheffield Turnpike Company? I've added a note to Talk:Hope, Derbyshire about the name of the turnpike and suggested altering both articles if someone can find when names were changed.
