Note on naming - the benzyl compound was invented first and is listed as an example in the 2009 Pfizer patent, it also appeared on the illicit market first in 2016 and was assigned the name ADB-BINACA as the desfluoro derivative of ADB-FUBINACA, however while it has continued to show up in seized samples from time to time, it has never become very widespread. The butyl derivative did not appear until a few years later but has also been sold under the name ADB-BINACA, as the butyl homologue of ADB-PINACA. This compound has become much more prevalent and widely sold, especially after widespread bans of the similar compounds 5F-ADB and AMB-FUBINACA. As of late 2021, the butyl derivative is one of the most commonly encountered synthetic cannabinoid compounds in many countries and is still most commonly referred to as ADB-BINACA among vendors, users and law enforcement, despite efforts by authors in the scientific literature to adopt the name ADB-BUTINACA to distinguish it from the benzyl compound. Consequently any compound being sold as ADB-BINACA is most likely to be the butyl compound, but there is still a chance that the benzyl compound may also be encountered under this name.
