Untitled[edit]

Aba is my home. Raised in Norfolk, Virginia USA until I was 3, I saw Enyimba city for the first time in 1979. I remember it looking like a painting rendered in red clay and rainforest deep green. The natives spoke Igbo which was lost on my American ears but that did not matter because their English was just as good. The memory of the sights, smells and sounds of Aba take me to a calm happy place. Yam and tomato stew, Akara and Akamu, moi-moi and agidi, draw soup - I must stop before I eat one of my American co-workers. Why did I leave? Daddy made me...plus the whole bad economy thing. Will you go back?, my American colleagues ask me....you damn skippy! God bless America but there is a reason the US holds records in suicide rates and divorce in spite of its properity and while I am unqualified to pontificate upon said reasons, I'm for sure not sticking around to find out. Nzogbu Nzogbu enyimba-enyi!!

The United States doesn't hold the record for highest suicide rate. That'd be Japan. For that matter, Sweden has more divorces (by percentage) than America. --Gwern (contribs) 02:08 21 January 2007 (GMT)

Population[edit]

The Encyclopedia Britannica says that as of 1992, Aba was estimated to have a population of 277,300. This article says a current population of 1.3 million. Did Aba really experience a growth in population on the order of a million people between 1992 and 2007? That seems improbable. --Gwern (contribs) 02:06 21 January 2007 (GMT)

Not at all improbable when you consider that 1) oil prices surged during that period, pumping a lot of money into the area's economy; and 2) unrest in the north has driven a lot of people south, but Lagos (their usual destination) is super-saturated with humanity. --76.170.31.0 23:18, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aba or Abba?[edit]

The author Chimamanda Adichie, who was born in Abba,Nigeria, spells it A-B-B-A, not A-B-A. Which spelling is correct?TammiMagee 11:33, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Abba (where the author you mentioned was born) is a town in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. The city in Abia State is Aba.Vellums (talk) 07:39, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral POV?[edit]

This article could use some editing to improve the colorful but non-neutral phrasing.

  • "4 million hardworking inhanitants (sic), albeit neglected by their government."
  • "The corruption of the current political hegemoney dominating and stangulating the city"
  • "many residents have argued that if a small portion of the loots were invested in the local industries, many of our youths will have jobs and education instead of a life of crime and hopelessness." (our)

Addtionally, numerous typos and syntax errors need cleaning up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Worldlysaint (talkcontribs) 13:52, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see the POV problem, appropriately perhaps in the politics section. That reads as if it were a speech by an opposition candidate in an election. I added a POV tag and half a dozen fact tags. If references are provided, I may try to turn the prose into something more neutral in tone; if no references are provided, I may simply delete it.Gallador (talk) 02:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aba, AbiaAba, Nigeria – Should be renamed just as Aba, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's an important city in Nigeria. Josedimaria237 (talk) 16:34, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Per WP:PLACEDAB, "Places are often disambiguated by the country in which they lie". However, Nigeria is one of a list of countries that is an exception to this rule, and its cities are to be disambiguated using the name of the state. I'm not convinced that there is a good reason for that exception, and that's why I've created a discussion thread. 162 etc. (talk) 09:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @162 etc.: Nigeria should not be on that list, why is Nigeria on that list? Are Nigerian states popular and more known internationally as the states of the United States, provinces of China or states of Brazil? If we should go by this convention for Nigeria, then countries like DR Congo should be added to this list. I don't think it is appropriate for a city of 100,000+ and one of the largest in Nigeria be disambiguated by its province. Josedimaria237 (talk) 09:53, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think disambiguating Nigerian cities by state is a good policy either, and I hope that the discussion leads to changes in the wording of WP:PLACEDAB. 162 etc. (talk) 16:56, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
162 etc. Have a consensus be reached on WP:PLACEDAB?
