Needs Cleanup[edit]

Sort Values[edit]

According to the article this Afghani was referred to by an Afghani media outlet as "Mr. Sabet". This individual is referred to as Sabet or Mr. Sabet throughout the article.

It is a mistake to assume that every person who has a name with Arabic language components follows Arabic naming conventions. I have changed the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} value on the article page and the | value on this page to conform to the usage in the article.

We should sort on people's last names only if their name is an inherited lastname-surname. That someone is called Mr Sabet does not imply Sabet is an inherited lastname-surname. I was a teaching assistant in my last two years as an undergrad. It was for an introductory computer course -- but not, mind you, in the Computer Science Department. Rather it was a so-called "service" course, in a different faculty, taught by that faculties professor who had made the most use of computers while they were a student. This is a common and unfortunate phenomenon.
In my own interdisciplinary department there was a controversial request for admission. The young man was from Pakistan, and was the recently arrived husband of a young woman, already a student, also from Pakistan. She said he wanted to focus his studies on computer science. One reason his admission was controversial was that he didn't really speak English. Because I was a teaching assistant for a computer course, of sorts, I was asked to speak to him. I talked to them briefly about the University's computer resources. I said if he was admitted, I'd help him -- something I would do for any fellow student in my department. The young man's wife did all the talking. I don't remember him saying a word. I have no idea how much he understood of what I said. Apparently she did most of the talking during his admission interview as well. I was frankly surprised he was admitted. I learned the key piece of info that changed the admissions committee's mind was that his wife said, "We spoke with Professor George, and he offered his help."
Well, my first name is George, and, coincidentally, the surname of the Dean of the Computer Science Deparmtent was George. Everyone assumed that by "Professor George" she meant the Dean of Computer Science. I realized she meant me, and my casual offer of help.
My point in telling this anecdote is that one can't assume that people from regions that don't normally follow the rules for European inherited lastname-surnames are following the rules for European names just because they use Mister or Doctor or Professor.
Unless you can produce a stronger justification that his family uses an inherited lastname-surname I think the sort order should be restored to the non-European form. Geo Swan (talk) 01:39, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
