The Rolling Stones version[edit]

Studio band lineup on the original[edit]

The source says that the keyboards were played by both Earl Van Dyke (Hammond organ and Johnny Griffith (Wurlitzer electric piano), and they're also mentioned in their obituaries as having played their respective instruments on the song and the source within the article does indeed have the same musicians as the list here does: Earl Van Dyke (Hammond organ), Johnny Griffith (Wurlitzer electric piano), Joe Messina (guitar), Uriel Jones (drums), James Jamerson (bass guitar), Jack Ashford (tambourine), Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion) and Henry Cosby (saxophone solo). It's difficult to find out with certainty, however, about who played what on the songs released prior to 1971, as Motown Records didn't start listing the credits until then, so even though the source already here is a good start, I'm not sure how reliable it is by Wikipedia standards, and so if I find one or more better sources, I'll go ahead and replace the existing source with the better source(s). But yes, the given source (along with their obituaries) CLEARLY state that Van Dyke played organ and Griffith played electric piano, and so I'm gonna go ahead and add "Earl Van Dyke on organ" to the list.--2601:153:900:43F0:9C2E:FB51:270A:DA17 (talk) 05:55, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That source says nothing about who played what on the original version. However, Johnny Griffith on electric piano and Uriel Jones on drums are both mentioned in their obituaries as having played their respective instruments. And there's a YouTube video compilation of James Jamerson's isolated basslines, and this song was included there, which also has a slide show of Griffith, Jones, Earl Van Dyke (presumably on organ) and percussionist Eddie "Bongo" Brown, possibly indicating that they played on the song. However, I don't think a YouTube video is a reliable source. I don't know of any sources that indicate the guitar part was played by Joe Messina, the tambourine by Jack Ashford, and the sax solo by Henry Cosby, although I'd say it was likely them who played their respective instruments, considering that Messina was one of the Funk Brothers' most prolific guitarists, Ashford played virtually all of the tambourine parts, and Cosby was the band's principal tenor saxophonist (the articles on Joe Messina and Henry Cosby even mention their work with the Temptations), but to save everyone else from saying it, that claim is original research on my part. Pure and simple. Does anyone have the liner notes for the 1966 box set of the Motown singles collection? That may have the most accurate information. Until reliable sources indicating that was the band lineup on the song are found, that information stays out.
