His shimmering, soulful voice has propelled countless hits across genres …

Could someone apply a bit of basic WP:PEACOCK and WP:NPOV filering to the public relations cut-and-paste in the article's first paragraph, quoted above? At the very least, this artist's works cannot be “countless” if there are other Wikipedia pages at “Akon discography” and “Akon production discography” which count them. And regardless of whether this singer's voice is truly “shimmering [and] soulful”, citing the listener who offered that description would be nice.

Is copyright an issue here? Some or all of the lead paragraph of the Wikipedia article also appears on these sites:

Fraudulant

While prison, court, and corrections records show that Akon has been arrested six times, he has only ever been Konvicted of one felony.

A 1998 gun possession charge in New Jersey. After pleading guilty, the supposed self proclaimed thug got a sentence of three years probation, with no county or state jail term. That same year he was arrested in Dekalb county, Georgia for possessing a stolen automobile. He was held at a county jail for a few sparse months and released when all charges were dropped. This information is free to all via the federal freedom of information act, feel free to verify the fact that Aliaune Thiam has forged a false and fraudulant past in order to have what hwe saw was necessary to be successful in the hip hop industry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.226.35.122 (talk) 17:11, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Place of birth USA not Senegal?

I think we should change birthplace from Saint-Louis, Senegal to St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

In an interview, he stated he was born in St. Louis and that his parents ensured he was "born in the States". http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1501105/akon-trouble-no-more.jhtml

On his biography at his charity's website it is also stated he was born in St. Louis and that his mother also moved to the St. Louis, Missouri area in 1972: http://www.konfidence.org/aboutus.html

Forbes article states "What's fairly certain is that Akon was born in St. Louis, Mo., sometime in the past 40 years and spent much of his childhood in the West African country of Senegal": http://www.forbes.com/2009/07/08/akon-hip-hop-music-business-entertainment-cash-kings-akon.html

NY Daily News article states he was born in St. Louis before moving to Senegal: https://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music-arts/rapper-akon-matures-new-album-freedom-article-1.356383

His father's wikipedia page states that he moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1968: Mor_Thiam

Are there any better sources to contradict this?

This page is also linked by several St. Louis, Missouri-related groups/lists on wikipedia which are all wrong if he was not born in the USA.

Neither templates should be expanded, in the cases where there are more than one navbox in an article, they should all be collapsed. More often than not the navboxes should always be collapsed, but having it expanded on the subject of the navbox (Konvict Muzik) is just fine. STATic message me! 17:48, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. Michael Jackson Relationship

HI in the section about his relationship with Michael Jackson, there are lots of things that can be included, such as:

he remixed, produced and sang in the song "Wanna Be Startin' Something 2008" from Jackson's album "Thriller 25".

In 2008 Akon recorded an original new song with Michael Jackson called "Hold My Hand" which was supposed to be released on his newest album but ended not being released at all, instead leaking to the internet and becoming one of the most popularly played on youtube and downloaded new tracks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by STATicVapor (talkcontribs) 17:45, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Please change the very first line of the article from "Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Bongo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam[1] (born April 16, 1973) ..." to "Aliaune Damala Akon Thiam (born April 16, 1973) ..."

The current long name listed is transcribed from an interview on Ellen, and seems extremely unlikely to be the correct spelling, and honestly seems like someone making fun of his long name. It would be better to write his name as the shortened version, which according to the "Early Life" section is how he refers to himself, unless documents showing the full long name in writing can be found. 50.161.117.252 (talk) 04:46, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Akon Lighting Africa

Akon and Thione Niang, the co-founders of Akon Lighting Africa with Samba Bathily, both grew up in Kaolack, Senegal, a town without electricity. It is their childhood memories and personal experience of a “life without light” that fuels their commitment.

They began discussing what they could do to actively help drive Africa’s transformation in September 2013 in Washington DC. A few weeks later, they agreed that the top priority was to invest in energy, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, because this was the essential foundation for everything else – education, health and economic development.

Their plan came to life once they were joined by Samba Bathily, an entrepreneur from Mali specializing in solar energy. Not only did he share Akon and Thione Niang’s beliefs, he was also able to provide targeted solutions through his company, Solektra INT, which supplies solar-powered equipment. By combining their networks and international experience and expertise, the three men launched this ambitious project in February 2014, with a view to supporting African growth as well as the empowerment of African youth.

Since then, the three founders have put everything into the project, negotiating win-win partnerships with African States and continuing to extend this initiative and amplify its impact.

Akon Lighting Africa already operates in about ten countries and is looking for greater expansion across Africa.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.61.254.32 (talk) 16:48, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Some comments from YouTube about his name:
  1. He said Alioune Awma time pour nakala loudul Badara Akon Thiam, this means "Alioune I don't have time for how it is if not Badara Akon Thiam. His name is Alioune Badara 'Akon' Thiam, the rest is a wollof sentence he just added in. I speak wollof. I think he was just being a lil silly :) (8 months ago)
  2. Sounded more like he said Aliaune Ouma Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam (10 months ago)
  3. This is not true...I noticed when comes the time to talk about about Akon makes fun of western hosts. I once watched a video in which he was literally insulting the girl in wolof. FYI this absolutely not his name.
    [It's his name.]
I'm telling you that it's not. Ask any senegalese they will have the same answer. and this kind of things reinforces stereotypes. His name is just alioune badara Thiam . period. (10 months ago)

He has 2 names of the Messenger: alioune and Badara ( refering to the Badr war). Thiam is a common last name in Senegal. I am a big fan but I've been deceived. I thought u r too proud of your african roots. I seems u show it everywhere u go. (1 year ago)

  7. What is hilarious for me is that the guy is lying about his name, i'm from Senegal too and this is just not true lool, "damala bouga time" for example means in "i wanna f**k you" in wolof ( senegalese language) . It's as if he said his name was " Aliaune i want to f**k you bongo ...." Lmao (1 year ago)
  8. he says it like: Alineomotime Purunakalulu Badar Akocham (2 years ago)
  9. Real name: Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Bongo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam
How I say it: Aline One More Time Poor Nana Cappuccino Who Who Bad Rain Akon Chomp (1 year ago)
  10. Damala Bouga means I want you in wollof ( His language), Nacka la Lo Lu means what's that thing or what's that called... thats not his real name LOL...he was messing with her xD LOL

Dama bouga time puru Nacka la lo lu ( i want time to, whatcha call it....)

if you change the A to a U in 'Nacka' and drop the la

Dama bouga time puru Nucka lo lu (i want time to f*ck that)

Think he might be referring to his hit song Smack that (2 years ago)
  11. "Aliune Awma time puru nacka lolu Badara Akon Thiam (cham)" translates Aliune i don't have the time for that thing Badara Akon Thiam. He is either joking or lying about his name. (2 years ago)

In the section titled Musical Career, 2003-05: Discovery and Trouble, in the first paragraph, third sentence, there should probably be a comma between the names "Elektra Stephens" as in "Elektra, Stephens." As written, without a comma, the sentence does not make sense. Also, what is Elektra? This is not a title/name mentioned previously, there is no context provided, and the citation makes no mention of Elektra. I believe the primary (first) image should be updated, as it is outdated (shows Akon performing in 2009 - almost 10 years ago). I would suggest perhaps an image of him in a suit, or something similar, to better showcase the humanitarian work he has done in recent years. Colin.mackay7 (talk) 20:26, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Under "Personal Life", there first paragraph is formatted as plaintext. I don't necessarily know how to go about formatting that, but I wanted to let someone know. Pharkryi (talk) 22:00, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

I Simply want to change "active" from 1996 to 2003-2004, since that's when he actually started his musical career (in fact, you already see the "active since 2003" part when you type "akon wikipedia" on google, but for whatever reason it doesn't show once you access his wikipedia profile

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. DannyS712 (talk) 18:29, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Apon

This guy's real name is Apon, pronounced 'Ape-on'. Not a lot of people know that... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C6:4A07:6C00:D9BA:79A:3949:CCEB (talk) 18:41, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

Akon's Full Name and Date of Birth

Akon’s full name is, Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, as announced by himself. Also, it has since been confirmed that his birth certificate says he was born on April 16, 1977. Would anyone here please make that change right away? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.70.37.196 (talk) 00:42, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Correct Alt Text

Change the alt text to something accurate like "A man wearing a shirt, standing behind a microphone." 2607:F6D0:D:3567:0:0:0:180 (talk) 06:34, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Early life

Should be specified that he was born in Saint-Louis, USA as there is also one in Sénégal — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.70.152.26 (talk) 12:58, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

"Through his father Mor Thiam, he is part part Dogon, an ethnic group of Mali." Should be edited--only needs one "part."

change Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam to Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam

This source is cited here which points to this video of Akon pronouncing his full name. – Thjarkur (talk) 19:59, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Okay, but what about this source? It seems like his real full name is Aliaune Damala Thiam. – Prauce Vuette (talk) 21:23, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

No Dogon ancestry

After doing a lot of Internet research about the ancestry of Mor Thiam and Akon, I now very strongly doubt that Mor Thiam and his son have any Dogon ancestry at all. The only websites that say this are unreliable fan sites that do not cite any reliable sources.

The Dogon are a relatively isolated ethnic minority located deep in the interior of Mali, way too far from the coast of Senegal where Akon's family is from. Wolof and Fula ancestry would be believable, but there is certainly no evidence that there is indeed any Dogon ancestry. Thus, I am removing the claim that he has Dogon ancestry.
