Life at Albania plantatiion.[edit]

I cannot help but rook at this beautiful restoration and not remember when it was a working plantation and sugar mill.

Sitting on the beautiful Bayou Teche and the surrounding area is almost too much to think of. As a child my father was the plantation manager under Mr. Steven Munson. The Munson family live in the mansion and it ws in great condition. Our family live in the overseer's house about 1/4th mile closer to Jeanerete. Our home was built for us by Albania corp. It was in the shadow of the giant sugar mill. As a child I had free range of the whole area and spent many hours roaming the 3 story sugar mill and grounds. I spent many hours riding the fields with my father in the company one seat Chevrolet business coupe car. I would go with him in the morning to the company office and have the opportunity to ring the large plantation bell that was high up on a steel tower to call the workers to work.

The worker housing was across the bayou. There was a large wooden swing bridge that had to be hand cranked to open for the paddle wheel boats pushing logs chained together down stream to the saw mills. I really enjoyed helping to "crank" the bridge open.

At that time, all work was done by mules and hand tools and very few crude tractors.

Our cows were kept near the bayou on the other side of the mansion. I would go with the yard man who worked for us to milk the cows. We had a home made wagon that the cans of milk were loaded and and pushed to town to a local grocery. Records were kept and we traded the milk for groceries.

Some times the kitchen that was seperat from the mansion by a short porch was a place I liked to visit and receive "treats" from the cooks. Naturally I was not allowed to venture into the main house.
