Questions[edit]

Was El Reino de este mundo published in 1957, or was that just the English translation? I think the original was in 1949, no?

Wasn't he born in Havana from a Cuban mother and a French dad?

That's what it says on his official website, I think the information on this article might just be misinformed. Check this out: www.cubaliteraria.com/autor/alejo_carpentier/biogra.htm

The article claims he won the 1979 Prix Médicis but he is not on Wikipedia's list so I inserted a "citation needed" notice. Artist In Flight 12:23, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree about his place of birth. I've checked in printed materials from Klaus Muller-Burgh ("Alejo Carpentier: Estudio biogra'fico cri'tico" 1972) and Donald Shaw ("Alejo Carpentier" 1985) , two respected critics, and both say that he was born in Havana. As far as I can tell, Roberto Gonzalez Echeverri'ia doesn't get into the place of birth in "Alejo Carpentier: The Pilgrim at Home" (1977, 1990). I'll change the place of birth mention in this article, but if anyone can find a citation to back up the Switzerland claim, please change it back and list the citation. • I have checked and rechecked the birth place issue. It was in fact in Switzerland. I will provide sufficient sources to corroborate the fact. But, I think the strongest source is Encyclopedia Britannica, which lists the birth place as Switzerland.--Charleenmerced Talk 19:22, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
