Criticism paragraph

Due to the unsuccessful nature of the Yankees 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 postseasons, along with Rodriguez's sub .200 batting average in the postseasons of 2005 and 2006,[44] Rodriguez has drawn much criticism in the New York area. He is often compared unfavorably to other Yankees greats who have performed exceptionally well in the postseason, such as Reggie Jackson.

It should read:

Only foreignors should refer to other countries

Inconsistent treatment of natural born whites versus hispanic natural born players.

Either refer to heritage of parents of all white players or just mention that A-Rod is an American.

Why special treatment for American born hispanics?

Referring to Rodriguez as a Dominican American seems accurate to me because he has dual citizenship. He also lived in both countries during his childhood. Furthermore, although he missed the tournament due to injury, he had announced his intention to play for the Dominican Republic in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, after having played for the U.S. in 2006.[1] I think this shows that, to Rodriguez, Dominican and American are integral parts of his nationality. --James Fahringer (talk) 00:32, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Coming to America

Two items

  1. The intro discusses extensively "prior to 31st birthday", but Rodriguez is now 33. The sentences containing "currently first" and "to this point in his career ... prior to their 31st birthdays" are both in need of reflection of this fact. At present they seem to indicate that he is still under 31.
  2. The "1997–99 season" section lists Alex as the 5th youngest player to hit for the cycle, while the intro lists him as the youngest. -71.235.99.213 (talk) 16:23, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

"A-Fraud" and "A-Roid"

I strongly suggest we remove these nicknames from the article, or at least move them in the steroid use section. They are clear violations of WP:BLP and simply do not deserve to be mentioned in the lead. They are not a common nicknames. Do U(knome)? yes...or no 06:38, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Both are in common use among opposing fans, especially "A-Fraud" which was already being used before the steroid revelations (and according to former Yankees manager Joe Torre, even A-Rod's own teammates used the nickname). If they're citable (and "A-Fraud" at least is easy to cite, clearly reliable sources like NBC have noted it)...WP:BLP is important, but it doesn't mean all criticism of the person must be excised from their article. 75.76.213.106 (talk) 03:13, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Penalty for Steroid Use

I don't have the actual citations, but I was reading this article and found that at the end of the steroids section, there is a line that states that he will not face penalty or legal sanction. This is simply not true; just yesterday, Commissioner Selig stated that he is currently deciding on whether or not to punish Rodriguez for his admitted use, citing different reasons. Rodriguez refers to himself as "biracial" in a Sports Illustrated interview that's used as a reference (and quoted) in this article. Does anybody know specifics about this, i.e., what races each parent are/were? Could Care Less

The phrase "Could Care Less" may be a bastardization of the British "Couldn't Care Less," but it is still a legitimate and very common American slang phrase. It does not warrant a [sic]. Image consultants

Preceding mention that Rodriguez will be a spokesperson against steroids it mentions he hires a "cadre of image consultants". I think it's OK to mention the consultants in the article, but putting it right before mentioning he'll speak against steroids to high school children is implicitly accusing him of only doing it for selfish reasons and is therefore biased. 65.199.57.194 (talk) 22:08, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Good catch. I agree it could be relevant for a part of the article where it doesn't produce bias, but as I couldn't find a spot I took it out. I agree with you on this, but with the high level of interest, there's not much we can do. After the WS is over, anonymous users will stop coming around adding little bits and pieces of information that fail the WP:RECENT test, and we'll fix up the section for a more appropriate historical perspective. Another typo is a contradiction about his playing at the University of Miami. On the one hand, the opening paragraph says he played, but later on it says he signed a letter of intent but instead went pro.

His nationality

We know that because his natural born, for purposes of the presidency, he is an American. But this is a baseball player and for the baseball world, he is Dominican for the World Baseball Classic. This is solely for the baseball world. Thus he has two categories of nationality that are notable. His real nationality of American and his baseball nationhood. It is just that when I watch the World Series, it made he think he was Tony Fernandez in that he wasn't American. It is confusing. Therefore I think it notable that readers should not be confused and that the bvaseball world frequently refers to him as Dominican, which is silly because he learned to play in America! Criticism Section - Not Clutch

This section is basically about how Arod is not considered to be clutch. The section is outdated and irrelevant due to his performance in the 2009 playoffs. I made some dramatic changes to the section, trying to shorten it and update it. Also, I've tried to reorganize the section as it had obviously grown organically over a long period. I made some minor copyedits to the section. I think the section ought to stay included -- it's part of Arod's historical record that he's come under fire for being "un-clutch" (ludicrous as those criticisms may have been). Range Factor

The range factor claims currently tagged as as "citation needed" can be verified on <a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/year/2004/position/3b/league/al/sort/rangeFactor/order/true">ESPN's page</a> (and probably elsewhere). The claims as stated are accurate and verifiable. I'd add the cite, but on second thought I question whether it's really a useful thing to state. It makes it sound like that's the final word on his defense, which it surely isn't. Range factor isn't the only defensive stat, and A-Rod does not rank last on many of the others. To cite it exclusively feels like you're trying to push a point of view criticizing him defensively. (Also, even on range factor, in 2004 and 2005 he was tied for last, not alone.) "Youngest to hit 600"

This stat is misleading, while he may be the youngest to achieve this he took an above average time to do so. He played 183 more games than Babe Ruth. Because Rodriguez started playing baseball at a much earlier age than many of the greats should be noted. He is a good player, but statements concerning his age should be taken out. The above sentences, the last of the criticism section, are not current and not supported by its source, which was from before the '09 WS (although the statistics in the sentences were accurate through 2009). Additionally, citation to baseball-reference.com provides support to the previously unsupported first sentence of the paragraph ("Rodriguez answered many of the criticisms of his postseason performance by performing exceptionally well in the 2009 postseason, where he posted a .365 BA and hit 6 home-runs in 52 at-bats during the Yankees' 15 post-season games."). Strikeouts

The article should contain references to Rodriguez's 1,982 career strikeouts (5th all-time, 2nd among active players). Furthermore, I would argue his SOs should be listed in his career statistics info box, as A-Rod, like 2 other active players in the Top 10, is known for his high SO rate. I'd recommend to start a "Player profile" section and his hitting style can mention his strikeouts. He's not in the Adam Dunn or Ryan Howard class as far as K rate, and its not a defining part of his legacy.—Bagumba (talk) 22:18, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Good thought. I didn't see a player profile yet so thought this would be a quicker way to let viewers know he strikes out 21% of his official ABs (true, that Dunn is at 34%) until someone more interested implements a player profile. Good suggestion, however. His regular season SO rate may not be as well known as his post-season rate as far his "legacy" goes but I did already see some mention of his post-season struggles in the article. Needs a Trim

I think some of the material in here could be trimmed a little as it's quite a bloated article. Some of it verges on gossip - e.g. there's a full paragraph that simply reads "As previously mentioned, Rodriguez and Jeter's friendship had cooled in recent years. However as of 2011, they have grown close again." I'd question whether material of that nature is really necessary. Indeed that particular section of the article (Personal Life) just tails off into a list of newspaper fluff stories. Bandanamerchant (talk) 01:08, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

We can definitely look into certain places we can trim. When I got Jeter's article passed as a Featured Article, I was told I needed to document the Jeter-ARod relationship clearly. You can see the review on the Jeter talk page. Other tabloid-y stories could be cut, depending on what they are and how important they really are. I find:

Did I hear something about this coming Thursday (2 days after the writing of the message you are reading)? Also, I remember hearing he was to be suspended for the rest of the 2013 season and all of the 2014 season. Where does "211 games" start? (There are 162 games in a regular major-league season.) The word "However"

In the section: Much of the criticism regarding Rodriguez focuses on his alleged inability to produce hits in clutch situations.[102][103] However, during the 2003–05 regular seasons, Rodriguez posted a .371 batting average with the bases loaded and maintained an on-base percentage of .422. In 2006, his numbers improved to .474 and .500 respectively. In 2007, through July 14 he hit .444 and .455, respectively. The second sentence starts with the word "However". This indicates that the coming sentences will somehow contradict the previous sentence. So what is it? Is Alex unable to produce hits in clutch situations or not? It should be fairly simple to calculate if there is statistically relevant evidence that he misses alot "under pressure", if someone provided me the data. I don't know baseball, I mean, at ALL, so I don't know wtf the text is saying. Data that would be needed is # of clutch situations, misses and hits. Clutch situations would be abit arbitrary to define, but important situations when the game depended on him or such I guess.

If the section, as it is, indeed doesn't disprove the allegation and continues not to do so, then the word "However" should defenitely be removed. It clearly points to having contradictory data.

Error found in minor league career entry

The article erroneously states that Rodriquez " began the season playing for Seattle's AAA affiliate, the Calgary Cannons."

Actually Rodriquez began in his professional career in Appleton, Wisconsin as a member of Seattle's A ball affiliate the Appleton Foxes. Rodriquez played 65 games in Appleton before being promoted to AA where he played 17 games before being promoted to Calgary. Ultimately, before the 1994 season was completed, Rodriquez progressed four levels from A to the major leagues in one season. Former Appleton Foxes pitcher Tom Gordon achieved the same accomplishment in 1988 as a member of the Kansas City Royals organization.

The imposter also owns this account, and is petitioning to vandalize another rising YouTube star. Wikipedia admins do not block for non-disruptive edits and intersite drama. This site is not a court house either, it's a user-contributed encyclopedia on which we are supposed to use talk pages for the sole purpose of discussing the article. You have an account that was blocked from here years ago for violating Wikipedia policies (though I can't yet prove this because IP's change over time).

Apparently it was 2013, but I had to look elsewhere to confirm that.
