China?[edit]

It appears that this Alliance was a melding of the dictatorship of the People's Republic of China and the democracy of the United States.

Is this an even remotely fair treatment?

--Taliesin84 22:24, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Nope, seems rather obviously POV.Kuralyov 00:08, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Joss has told us (at some point, possibly on the DVDs) that the reason China and the USA are the chief prescences in the new galaxy is because they were the only two countries that survived, following some kind of nuclear war.

Wow, how freakin' brainwashed are you Americans? China is not a dictatorship. 203.173.28.131 (talk) 03:07, 26 January 2012 (UTC) Sutter Cane[reply]

City ships[edit]

Does anyone else think that it's misleading to say that Alliance ships look like cities? Cities imply many buildings, whereas the sips are one mass. --Arctic.gnome 21:04, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They look like cities. They have a wide base with many towers of various sizes rising out of the base, so yes, they do indeed look like many buildings. It's not misleading at all. Kuralyov 00:08, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alliance troop costumes[edit]

I've reverted a statement about the Alliance ground troops' armor coming from Space: Above and Beyond. The Starship Troopers costume rental is explicitly mentioned by Joss Whedon in the DVD commentary to "The Train Job", just as Mal and Zoë discover the troops on the train. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 08:39, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nurseries on ships[edit]

… we learn that Alliance ships have nurseries, suggesting that starship crews are joined by their families while on duty.

I removed the inferential part of the above line because it's just as possible that a city-sized military vessel might need a nursery just for the tiny percentage of female personnel who happen to be giving birth at any time. It seems too speculative unless we can get a canonical source. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:44, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Weyland-Yutani link[edit]

Someone just added the following line to this article, concerning Blue Sun comparisons:

A lesser example is the Weyland-Yutani corporation of Alien fame, whose logo can be seen on certain Alliance weapons.

Do we have a source for this information? It seems like a bit of a stretch without one. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 15:40, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

>> Yes, the WY logo is visible in the pilot, on the HUD of the gun Mal uses to shoot an aircarft down at Serenity Valley. (Center top of the HUD) ~raph (noryal@gmail.com), 29 November 2005

There's one more link between WY and Firefly. The WY slogan is "Building Better Worlds." This is almost the exact phrase The Operative uses in Serenity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.38.75.139 (talk) 22:07, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Londinium[edit]

i just watched the Firefly Pilot and the Subtitles say Mals line "...king of all Londinium" is "king of Olandina". But maybe they're just wrong?

Cheers!

Events of Serenity[edit]

I'm surprised that the article has not made any mention at all of the events of the film. Given that many in the 'verse become aware of the Alliance's deadly secret is an important issue to touch upon. Though, much like always when I go requesting rather than doing myself, I simply don't know where this would currently fit in with the article. History section? I just don't want to unbalance things. --Bacteria 01:42, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about a "Events of Serenity" section? I'm open to suggestions as to where in the article to insert it though. --Pentasyllabic 02:51, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What I'm thinking is to retitle the History section with something that would encompass the Alliance's entire (known) grip on the system, thus going from the little knowledge of its formation to the fracture in strength it suffered as stated by The Operative at the end of the film. --Bacteria 06:23, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes[edit]

The quotes marked "Opening narration; first lines spoken in series" -- where are they from? I can't find them in either 'first' episode (Serenity or The Train Job). Njál 21:24, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They were in the original TV broadcast of the series, but they're not on the DVDs. Pettifogger 21:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alliance Military - Gunships[edit]

This section mentions that we never see Gunships. As far as I can tell (I'd have to go watch the show again to be sure, and oh gosh darn do I hate watching Firefly :*D), we briefly see the Gunships, still docked on the underside of IAV Dortmunder in the pilot episode, and we also see similar vessels in the episodes "Garbage" (landing at Belerophon Estates shortly before the Feds show up in person) and "The Message" (the rogue Alliance marshal flies in one of these). Though the ships in the later episodes are never refered to as gunships, they do seem rather similar to the craft briefly shown in Serenity, so unless anyone comes up with a compelling objection, I'm going to add it when I get home from work tonight.--Raguleader 23:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really have a compelling objection, but I do have an objection nonetheless. It might be that those ships are the gunships referred to in dialogue, you might be dead-on, but we haven't had any kind of on-screen confirmation that they actually are. Nobody has pointed to them and said "Those are gunships", they could very well be a completely unconnected form of fighter craft. Right now, with "I believe..." and "It makes sense that..." as the primary evidence, this would be considered conjecture, which is a no-no in articles. Sorry. JBK405 00:50, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since that's what the camera focused on (after cutting to an entirely different setting just to look at the ships) it would be a safe assumption that that's what they were talking about. Does anybody have a copy of the script for the episode to see if it makes particular mention of them?--Raguleader 17:53, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See, that's the rub right there, "it would be a safe assumption". I'm not an expert on Wikipedia, but I'm pretty sure that assumptions aren't verifiable sources. A script would be best, it would give some sort of backing. JBK405 17:16, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flag[edit]

Anyone got an image of the flag? There are several ways you could merge the PRC and USA flags, and it would lend a bit more completeness to the article (maybe on top of a Fictional Superpowers infobox if one exists).Leushenko 00:50, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Language[edit]

At the end of the section titled "Universe", the article mentions that a warning message was repeated in English and Cantonese. Is this correct? I don't speak any form of Chinese and haven't seen this, but I would have thought the Alliance would use some form of Mandarin as I am given to the understanding that it is the PRC's main language. Leushenko 17:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Downfall?[edit]

At the end of the article on the Alliance the damage the Alliance has taken from the revelations concerning the planet Miranda is mentioned under the subject of 'downfall'. Given that the Operative states that the Alliance is only weakened this seems to be a bit of a stretch. Can anyone think of a better title? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iuniper (talkcontribs) 05:36, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alliance includes more than German military uniform[edit]

In the pilot of the series Firefly the capital ship is called "Dortmunder" which is a city in germany. This is an indicator that the military has a stron german resemblence, since german battleships today are called by a german city like the "Hamburg". See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg_%28D_181%29 or the Ludwigshafen see: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwigshafen_am_Rhein_%28F_264%29 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.79.14.62 (talk) 14:07, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dortmund is the name of a city. Dortmunder means pertaining to Dortmund. No navy in the world has battleships today. The Hamburg was a destroyer, which was decomissioned 20 years ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deathmare (talkcontribs) 15:01, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
