This article deals with two separate topics - Amavasya - the new moon day and its significance (not very elaborate); and the latter part deals with "Mahalaya Paksha" - an entirely different category. The Mahalaya Paksha, as referred in the article, deals with the 14 days co-inciding with a particular phase of the Moon occuring in a particular (Indian) Lunar Calendar. There should be either a split into separate articles, or at least, sub heading.

Less mysticism and more sociology?[edit]
