I have deleted the notability-bot's warning as it is superfluous. The article already links to numerous external sites establishing notability. For example, the subject of the article is the recipient of the Royal Society's Royal Medal, almost every other recipient of which has their own Wikipedia page. It wasn't a bot who added the notability tag, it was a person. It isn't superfluous. There are no independent, reliable references about him. His own publications do not count. There are no links to any awards. Bgwhite (talk) 07:16, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I do apologize for thinking it was a bot. And thank you for your attention to this page, which I would like to strive to ensure meets all Wikipedia guidelines. I recognize that his publications don't count; I'd thought that a link to a Wikipedia page of Royal Medallists, plus a press release from his institution about the award, would count. My mistake... I've now added a link to the Royal Society website, which I trust is an independent and reliable source (it's the UK Commonwealth's premier scientific institution, roughly comparable to the US National Academy, the Israel Academy, the Chinese Academy, etc.) Again, thank you for your explanation: it is sometimes tricky to understand the correct approach. Just to add one more footnote re notability: the annual Royal Medal is for the three most important contributions in science in the UK Commonwealth. This list of medallists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Medal confirms that from 1826 through to the present day, all but two of the recipients have Wikipedia pages. So this is a very prestigious award, which would appear to be sufficient to establish notability, now that we have evidence in the form of an independent link to the Royal Society's own website Ian Henty Holmes (talk) 08:15, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This connection was flagged on the page, with an encouragement to discuss on the talk page, so I've moved that discussion here. I've tried for a neutral point of view in my edits; with imperfect success, I am sure, as true objectivity can be tricky. I welcome advice from more experienced Wikipedians, in order to improve the quality of this article, and ensure it meets neutrality guidelines.
