She's a biologist?[edit]

A BS in biology doesn't make you a biologist-- you have to actually do some biology. The article indicates that she was some sort of stock analyst, and then started a company. This would make her a businesswoman. Analyzing GM stock doesn't make you an automotive engineer; founding a software company doesn't make you a computer scientist. Ethnicity?[edit]

Do you mean in the lede ("an American biotech analysit...") or in the Early life section ("Russian and Polish descent")? I think that both of these cases are legitimate and proper, per Wikipedia guidelines. -FrankTobia (talk) 14:55, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity is a very "touchy" issue as far as placement, relevance, ect, ect. It is very common in most bios to include ethnicity. I agree that the way it it currently written is very "clunky"/awkward but not offensive. It could have citations, but that goes without saying. Is there more that you object too? Also, Brin's ethnicity is covered extensively in his own bio as it should be, to point it out here would be unsuall unlesss there was some significant reason to do so, which I can't think of. This is in regards to the text "Russian and Polish descent". I am not offended nor do I object to the utilization. It was more of an issue of consistency; merely, I am asking why this individual had this "ethnicity" info on the Brief Profile when it was not listed for her husband in his profile though it is known. I can only guess that many other individuals here on Wikipedia whose ethnicity may be known do not have their ethnicity listed as well.

As I said, the way the article is written now, its awkward and I to hate when ethnicity is "shoved" into articles as it is here, but alot of editors want ethnicity included, my guess being out of nationalist pride, ect, or for attack reasons, or for whatever reason. I think it adds usefull and legitmate biographical info. My biggest thing is when folks try to insert ethnicity into the lead sentence, ie Jewish-American, ect, which happens alot, which is a Wiki no-no. Bios usually don't go into ethnicity of spouses unless there is some good reason to do so. Again, folks can click on Sergey and read waaaay to much about his ethnicity and family background, imho. I being voted Most Likely to Succeed in your high school yearbook really something that belongs in the article? Edits reverted by me[edit]

I have reverted edits related to recent developments at 23andMe by Caneprig to avoid redundant and conflicting content on Wikipedia, in line with WP:CONTENTFORK and WP:BRD. These developments are covered thoroughly in the 23andMe article and selective coverage of the facts here is likely to be unbalanced and misleading. Caneprig has reverted my revert without any talk page discussion (BRR, i.e. edit warring).

Caneprig has also since added contentious material based on a tabloid source, which I will now remove in line with WP:BLPREMOVE, WP:BLPSOURCES and WP:BRD. Helen Online 13:50, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Subtle bias[edit]

It's everywhere on Wikipedia. In this article too: "She is the former wife of Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin." "It was reported on March 23, 2016 that Alex Rodriguez has been dating Wojcicki."

I changed them to: "She was formerly married to Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin." "It was reported on March 23, 2016 that Wojcicki has been dating professional baseball player Alex Rodriguez."

I find it amusing that in her own article, she is the figurative object of both of the original sentences, and also the grammatical object of the second. I wonder how often this type of subtle gender bias appears in Wikipedia articles in general.
