Country[edit]

I cannot find any evidence that this film is a Canadian production or a Mexican production. It appears that the production companies are American, but I might have missed details. Can anyone else weigh in? BOVINEBOY2008 22:46, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I’m going to hazard a guess that the Canadian stems solely from the film shooting in Canada, and the Mexican stems from del Toro being a native of the country. Rusted AutoParts 22:49, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disconnect between setting and mythology?[edit]

As I understand it, the name "wendigo" comes from Algonquin peoples of north-eastern North America -- and the film even opens with a woman speaking an Algonquin language -- but the film takes place in Oregon. Doubly strange is the fact that the character of retired sheriff, presumably an Oregon native, immediately identifies the creature despite it not being a part of his culture's myths.

Apparently, the "wechuge" is a north-western analogue to the monster, but the wendigo is more widely recognized in popular culture which I'm guessing is the reason it was used. However, I have not seen anybody mention this apparent disconnect, much less explain it.

I'm not criticizing the film, but is this worth mentioning in the article? Does anybody with more knowledge on this subject (either the mythology or the film) have any input?
