Year of birth[edit]

For some reason the newspapers are reporting Bird's year of birth as 1959 which is not correct. The only birth registration at the General Registry Office (GRO) of England and Wales (at Findmypast (search by name/year)) of any Antonia Bird is in 1951. Also the original resume of Bird's work that was copied, purportedly from her husband, stated she began working in theatre in 1968, "shortly after her 17th birthday". A lot of that stuff I deleted as blatant copy/paste, and COI, not to mention copyright infringement, but I believe that the year of birth cited (1951) is accurate. Yes, but BBC[1], NYTimes[2] and Variety[3], as well as others[4][5][6] say she was 54 this year. While the 1968/age 17 issue is troubling, the vast majority of sources seem to be saying she was born in 1959, and unless an unimpeachable source can be found (or corrections are issued) that's the year I'd go with, perhaps with a footnote to indicate that other sources exist that say 1951. I have added The Independent obituary as a citation. It goes both ways, 1951 in the text, but 1959 in the end summary. The details of her career given again suggest 1951 is correct as her year of birth. A piece on the BFI website again goes with 1951, and 24 October 2013 as the day she died. The author is Mark Cousins, a partner in her production company. I changed the reference to the date of death back to 24 October, because the Telegraph reference now looks like an error rather than a credible possibility.

As regards the beginning of Antonia Bird's life, the author of the Guardian obituary, the actress Kate Hardie, worked with her on several occasions and is clearly in a good position to get this detail right. See her twitter feed @KateHardie2. One tweet from 26 October reads: "Antonia Bird died aged 62. Laughed with her partner Ian today- the fact it is reported at 54 would have amused her greatly!....".
