Apollo 14 Backup Crew Patch (The BEEP-BEEP patch)

Be nice we can get a picture of the Apollo 14 "BEEP-BEEP" patch uploaded into the Commons. Would look good in the article and can give the reader a visual refernce to the "gotchas" that were placed in the storage lockers. Rwboa22 21:17, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Fiction?

Why is the part about "From the Earth to the Moon" listed under fiction? I thought it was non-fiction. Bubba73 (talk), 04:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

It is a dramatization (of actual events), but I don't think it is fiction ("An imaginative creation or a pretense that does not represent actuality but has been invented." Bubba73 (talk), 04:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Mission?

The mission highlights say the mission began with docking the LM and the CM... why? This should be explained, or the relevant article at least linked to -- it seems counter-intuitive. -- jhf 15:52, 9 January 2007 (UTC) This article states that Alan Shepard landed the lunar module but Edgar Mitchell was the lunar module pilot...why? --Joshua (talk) 18:41, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

It has been often siad that the term "Lunar Module Pilot" was misnome in the LMP did not actually pilot the LM. On every mission, it was the Mission Commmander's job to land the LM. Andy120290 (talk) 19:13, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

In fact if From the Earth to the Moon is to be believed, Alan Bean (Apollo 12) was the only LMP who did any piloting of the LM. Evil Monkey - Hello 21:37, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Shepard never "smuggled" anything

This article says that Shepard smuggled a golf club onto the flight. This is false. Shepherd is quoted as having said "...I played with a little makeshift golf club that I had received clearance to play with. I whacked a couple of golf balls up there." The article where this is quoted can be seen here...

I have also read this same basic idea in several other books that I would be happy to quote if someone believes this is necessary. I tried to correct it last night, but somebody reverted the page back to the previous content. Someone please fix this. Donboy2k 21:22, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Shepard never smuggled the 9-iron head and golf balls to the Moon. He told both Deke Slayton (astronaut boss) and Dr. Christopher Kraft (JSC Head) about the payload before the flight and gave the O.K., unlike the Apollo 15 crew and their stamps. Rwboa22 21:15, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

According to NASA's website here http://history.nasa.gov/alsj/a14/a14.clsout2.html, Jones says in his debrief: [Jones - "He topped and buried it on the first swing. I assume that the six-iron was snuck on board."] Incidentally, it was a 6-iron. Davidbod 10:29, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Saying that he "smuggled" something implies a negative connotation in that he did something that was against the rules. His bringing the club on board the flight was approved by management. Ever referred to as A14??

Is Apollo 14 ever referred to as A14?? This is an interesting question to me because I want to know if any dis-ambiguation page can be made at A14 which is currently a re-direct to "A14 road". Removed "BEEP-BEEP" quote

I removed the following quote about the spoofed backup crew patches:

Whenever one of the patches would float out of a locker during the flight, Shepard would say, "Tell Cernan, BEEP-BEEP my ass!"

There were no sources listed, and I couldn't find any with a quick search, so I removed the quote. Should anybody find a quotable source, then please re-add it. Tony Mach (talk) 19:17, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Solar eclipse

For Apollo 14 or 15, the camera was left operational after the astronauts lifted off from the moon, and it was intended to observe a solar eclipse (the Earth eclipsing the Sun), but the camera failed while mission control was remotely "touring" the landing site, and the eclipse could not be observed. Was this on 14 or 15 that it happened? Both these flights took off just before a lunar eclipse (as viewed from Earth). GBC 19:11, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Must have been 15; that was the first mission with ground control capability to move the camera (mounted on the Lunar Rover, which 14 did not carry.) There was no capability to control 14's camera from the ground, and it probably wouldn't have lasted as long because it was powered by the LM's battery.
