Both The Musical Times and The Manchester Guardian said at the time that the Birmingham performance attributed to Matthews in the article was in fact conducted by the composer: see "Music in the Provinces", The Musical Times, 1 November 1920, p. 769; and "Municipal Music in Birmingham", The Manchester Guardian, 11 October 1920, p. 6.
