Name[edit]

Does anyone know an authoritative source on where the name comes from? One obvious possibility is the ancient Greek word ἀργος (argos), maybe translated "lazy" but literally something like not effort. — Alan 14:24, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I could be wrong here, but I think it's from a Latin word meaning "index" or "guide". Certainly, there is a French word "argus" which is generally taken to refer to a national guide for products such as cars. If anyone has a better idea, I'd love to hear it! Dmccormac 20:23, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone, particularly an employee of Argos, know how much it costs them to produce the catalogue? At over 1500 pages, and given away for free, it must have significant costs. Mojo-chan 16:19, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before the expanded "Argos Extra" content was added, I was told by Argos management it was over £5 a copy to print and distribute.--Mgillespie 20:51, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I can give you exactly that information, hot off the presses for Cat 68. The average unit cost to produce and distribute a catalogue is £2.07. The average revenue generated by a catalogue is £104. --Ross UK 00:44, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting from the article: "Argos owns several brands including Elizabeth Duke (Dropped in the latest Catalogue)" Where is the proof of this? [[User:Vulcan5978(talk) 17:47, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the fact that the name doesn't appear in either the SS08 or AW08 catalogues, and refurbished stores just call the jewellery counter "Jewellery & Watches". Dmccormac (talk) 22:33, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Methods of payment[edit]

I would also dispute that you can use Green Shield Stamps in Argos. For a start, they've not been issued for years, and when I worked there they weren't in the employee manual as a payment method. Dmccormac (talk) 22:34, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, if you look in the Methods of Payment IBT training guide, they have a whole page to themselves, should be processed as Gift Vouchers but will likely never appear! 81.109.190.1 (talk) 20:06, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Euros[edit]

I see that the opening paragraphs talks about how much Argos made in its early years and opening in both GBP and Euros. Euros didn't exist in the 70s and 80s, and the comparable value of euros to pounds fluctuates.

Is there thus any point in including this information? If so, is it even accurate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.173.211.75 (talk) 23:21, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Catalogues - store vs home[edit]

Isn't it the case that in the home catalogues the index is at the back but in store it's at the front? A trivial difference, of course. I'm not in the UK so can't check this. I don't suppose we'd get RS for it, but it's a little tidbit. Si Trew (talk) 11:43, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rumour[edit]

With the demise of the Catalogue announced today, has come a major rumour that Sainsburys (the owner) intend to bring back Green Shield Stamps to replace their "nectar" clubcard. Can anybody provide a reliable source for this. It would be great to get this into the article. -Roxy the inedible dog . wooF 13:09, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
