Athletics as a Broad Term (U.S.)[edit]

This article is barely a stub. I propose to change the name to represent the U.S. view of "Athletics," which would discuss the inclusion of many sports and games, the major athletics associations, training, coaching, psychological, drug use, etc. I believe the reason this article has no development is that U.S. trainers and coaches who edit Wikipedia do not understand the lexicon within this project, i.e. "Athletics," "Sportsperson," "Physical fitness" (as differentiated from "Athleticism," etc. With this change, I believe more editors will have an outlet to share their knowledge. Merge Proposal[edit]

I propose merging this article with Sports training, as it is somewhat of an orphaned stub. TommyKirchhoff (talk) 19:34, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is a sensible idea that I agree with. SteadyJames (talk) 12:47, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fitness vs. Athletics[edit]

I have begun redirecting certain pages to differentiate between "fitness" and "athletics." In U.S. English, "fitness" connotes general health and aesthetics, while "athletics" connotes competitive, physical sports and games. An interesting anomaly is the profession of Athletic trainer which is not exclusive to competition. TommyKirchhoff (talk) 15:50, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First OED citation requires a subscription[edit]

Citation (1) links to the online OED that requires a subscription. I think it's one thing to cite a book that someone must purchase or check out from a library; but linking to a URL that requires a subscription is absurd in the Wiki context. I built this page and defended it valiantly from deletion from British zealots who are prejudiced to British connotation. While the OED definition may describe "athletics" not specific to track-and-field events in the secondary, I would like to see this citation changed to credible western connotation. I ask you for help to convert citation (1) to an accessible, online British definition that British zealots will acknowledge. I prefer this one: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/athletics Thank you, TommyKirchhoff (talk) 23:49, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
