Poseidon/Neptune

When you click the first word "Neptune", the link pipes to the Poseidon article. But Neptune (mythology) states he is "... analogous but not identical to the god Poseidon of Greek mythology. The Roman conception of Neptune owed a great deal to the Etruscan god Nethuns." So is it Poseidon or Neptune? I don't think it should be both. Art LaPella 01:40, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

OK, I'm guessing you meant Neptune (mythology) and couldn't find it due to the (). Changing to Neptune (mythology). Art LaPella 20:01, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm Wondering....

WILL THE MOVIE BE RELEASED ON BLU-RAY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.139.238.158 (talk) 22:15, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

The Haunting

At the near end of "The Haunting" (actually Part 10 at 9:31) a sound effect is heard. The same sound effect was used in "Atlantis" as the blue guy starts moving. --84.113.33.181 (talk) 11:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Joss Whedon writing credit?

Joss Whedon is mentioned as a writer both on his article, and in a category at the bottom of this one. Yet his name is not in the writing credits sidebar. Any explanation? --BlueNight (talk) 13:58, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Noticed this as well. He's credited as doing the treatment on IMDB. He's pretty far down the list, which is probably why he isn't mentioned in the article. --99.38.97.77 (talk) 18:56, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

But he's one of the first names on the credit scroll at end of the movie. --Mika1h (talk) 21:30, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Are there problems with any particular images within the article that you would like to see addressed? DrNegative (talk) 18:48, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
I removed the non-free video game cover pic as it didn't have a good rationale and didn't really add anything to the section anyway. DrNegative (talk) 18:54, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Apologies, DrNegative, I had to pause mid-review and hadn't gotten to the images yet— the gray icons are just the default placeholders. However, I was going to raise the topic of the heavy use of non-free images, but it seems you've beat me to the punch by taking care of that problem! Other than that, the images are all appropriately licensed and captioned, and the non-free images are of appropriate resolution and have fair use rationales, so no other concerns. I'm going to list the article. Regards, Swarm u | t 19:28, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

What About the Civilizations?

I've noticed that the Atlanteans in this movie look just like Chinese/Far Eastern People, except they have white hair. Other than the forms of architecture, the Atlanteans appear to be wearing colored Togas, Belts, Armor and Robes. A widely Middle-Eastern/Chinese influence. And they look nothing like Greeks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.218.240.73 (talk) 23:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Do you have a link to a reliable source which explicitly states that the Atlanteans were designed "just like Chinese/Far Eastern People, except they have white hair" or that they had "A widely Middle-Eastern/Chinese influence"? Or is this original research? Also, the article never mentions that the Atlanteans themselves were designed to look like the Greeks either, so I am unsure as to what you mean by that statement. Rewrote Plot section to replace copyvio (work in progress)

Moved to live article. DrNegative (talk) 11:06, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Plot

The film begins with an explosion and a massive wave approaching the island of Atlantis. The queen is drawn into a glowing blue beam projected from the "Heart of Atlantis," a huge crystal hovering above the city which activates a shield which protects the innermost portion of the city. She leaves behind a young daughter, princess Kida (Cree Summer), as the city disappears beneath the ocean.

Many millennia later in 1914, Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) is a cartographer and linguist at the Smithsonian Institution. He believes that his research has revealed the location of "The Shepherd's Journal", a ancient manuscript that allegedly reveals the way to Atlantis. After his proposal to seek out the journal is rejected, a mysterious woman named Helga (Claudia Christian) invites him to see her employer. She takes him to Preston B. Whitmore (John Mahoney), an eccentric millionaire who, owing a debt to Milo's late grandfather, has funded a successful effort to find the journal and now with it in hand, recruits Milo to decipher it and lead an expedition to find Atlantis.

The expedition departs with a crew of specialists and mercenaries led by Commander Rourke (James Garner), a military man who led the expedition to recover the journal. Among the crew are; Vinnie (Don Novello), the crew's demolition expert, Mole (Corey Burton), the geology specialist, Dr. Joshua Sweet (Phil Morris), the ship's medical officer, Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), a tomboyish mechanic, and Cookie (Jim Varney), the ship's western cook. They set out in a massive submarine, the Ulysses and as they approach the entrance to Atlantis, the Ulysses is attacked and destroyed by the Leviathan, a huge robotic guardian of Atlantis. Milo, Rourke, and a small complement of crew escape in small sub-pods, reaching an underground cavern described in the journal, continue ahead on foot and vehicle.

After traveling through a network of caves and a dormant volcano, the team discovers the city of Atlantis. They are greeted by Kida, now a young woman in her appearance only, who brings the group to meet her aging father. The King (Leonard Nimoy), who wants them to leave since their presence cannot mean any good, allows the explorers to stay one night to recoup and leave by morning. Milo discovers that Atlantis has fallen into ruins since disappearing into the earth, and Kida enlists Milo's help deciphering the runes throughout the city, the Atlantean written language, having been unknown and forgotten by the Atlanteans for centuries. Through deciphering ancient underwater murals, he helps her discover the nature of the "Heart of Atlantis" crystal, and finds that it gave the Atlanteans their power and life force through the crystals worn around their necks. He is surprised that the crystal is not mentioned within the journal but discovers that there is also a missing page.

Rourke turns out to have the missing page and he and the crew betray Milo with the intention of taking the crystal back to the surface to sell for a profit. Rourke mortally wounds the king in an effort to find the crystal's location and discovers it hidden beneath the king's throne room. Once found, the crystal detects an evil presence and merges itself with Kida as it did her mother. Rourke and the mercenaries lock Kida into a protective chamber and prepare to leave the city, but just before they leave Milo's friends have a dramatic change of heart, and go back to help Milo knowing that the crystal is what was keeping the Atlanteans alive. Later, in the palace, the King explains to Milo that the crystal had a consciousness of its own, and will seek out a royal host whenever the city is in danger. As he dies, he gives his crystal to Milo and tells him to save Atlantis and Kida. With encouragement from Dr. Sweet, Milo rallies the crew and the Atlanteans to pursue and stop Rourke.

In the ensuing battle within the dormant volcano, Rourke, Helga, and the mercenaries are all killed, but the volcano becomes active and an eruption ensues. The city's total destruction is imminent until Kida, in her crystal form, rises above the city to create a protective barrier. The lava breaks away to show now a newly restored Atlantis, with the crystal returning Kida into Milo's arms. The surviving crew returns to the surface, promising to Whitmore that they will keep the discovery of Atlantis a secret. Milo, having fallen in love with Kida, stays behind to help her rebuild the lost empire.

  • I rewrote the Plot section. It is about 750 words at this time, and I will continue to tweak and shorten it until it is allowed into the article to replace the copyvio warning. Constructive input welcome. DrNegative (talk) 07:58, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
Fantastic! All the text is well written and does not infringe on any sources. It looks like the copyvio issue has been resolved, in particular from the source mentioned in the tag earlier. Minima© (talk) 04:47, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

What is the scientific impact of this movie to the film industry?

Apparently it is not a ground breaking movie for visual effects. But should we talking a little bit more of the effect of rebuilt the Atlantis? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Killerlxt (talkcontribs) 20:12, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Sequel

There is no mention of this movie's "sequel", Atlantis: Milo's Return anywhere in the article. Is there a reason for this? If not, I believe it would be proper to add a mention of the sequel. 2602:304:CD9D:9980:6C94:AB43:7B7:23E7 (talk) 19:54, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

It is mentioned in the last sentence of the lead and it has a mention under the "Related works" subsection. DrNegative (talk) 22:29, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Main Page feature image

I'm just curious, why isn't the film poster not being used for the main page instead the Atlantean alphabet "a". It's kind of misleading. Those who are not familiar with the fictionalization of Disney might mistake it for being an actual documentary. Tandrum (talk) 04:44, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Tandrum, the rule is to use only free images on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia's mission as a free encyclopedia. The rule was implemented back around 2007, I believe. Erik (talk | contribs) 04:48, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Not happy with seeing 2D animation discredited in article

"The film was released at a time when audience interest in animated films was shifting away from hand-drawn animation toward films with full CGI."

I do not like this particular statement because I feel that it puts 2D animation in too much of a bad light that it shouldn't be in (suggesting that 2D animation is somehow bad or inferior), and think it would be better if this was left out of the article. I don't believe that 2D animated movies are any less good than CGI or that it's their fault if people only make CGI movies now. Nick108 (talk) 20:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Nick. Nobody is trying to discredit 2D animation. It has just been the trend that hand-drawn animation was replaced by full CGI. The passage you highlighted is covered in the article body. This is the reference. We are only noting a change in audience preference. Erik (talk | contribs) 21:10, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

The description of the conception of the film mentions that it was inspired by the relatively brief visit to Atlantis in Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, but at no time do the characters in that novel visit a place described as Atlantis (there is a visit to a world deep underground where the characters cross a great ocean and encounter ancient creatures, but no other civilizations are mentioned). However, the characters do visit Atlantis in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (and Captain Nemo specifically writes that it is, in fact, Atlantis) and there are several other elements of Atlantis: The Lost Empire that refer back to 20,000 Leagues: the large futuristic submarine, the various nationalities of the crew, and the mysterious power source that powers the underwater world.

That said, I don't know if the creators of Atlantis: The Lost Empire were inspired by some other scene in Journey to the Center of the Earth, so I didn't change it for now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.54.206.18 (talk) 03:02, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

I just double-checked the citation backing the statement, and both directors make specific mention of Journey to the Center of the Earth which is immediately followed by Don Hahn stating, "If you read that book, you know there is a section of that where they visit Atlantis, they kind of pass through Atlantis." Then Tab Murphy follows with, "But they don't spend any time there. It's a civilization that's dead and right when they get there, boom, the volcano explodes and they're gone." Hahn then follows with, "Let's take the Atlantis section of that idea and make a movie".
While they may have drew inspiration from 20,000 Leagues (which I am pretty sure they did at some point), they never mentioned it in that part of the source material. Also as you mentioned, maybe Verne never in fact called it Atlantis, but the team must have interpreted it as an inspiration of such based on their dialogue. DrNegative (talk) 02:41, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

A possible source of confusion is that, in the 1959 film adaptation of Journey to the Center of the Earth, the place in question is identified by the characters as "Atlantis". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.223.130.60 (talk) 04:32, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Unused Viking prologue

The prologue was used as an intro to a short 3D video game shooter released in cereal boxes as a promotional for the film. I know because I had one. I was disappointed that the prologue wasn't used in the film.
