Toph the Metalbender

Ok, it seems there is some consensus that the full details about metal bending probably don't belong on this page. I just want to make sure that consensus remains true, and to give the opportunity for those who feel otherwise to air their concerns. In any case, while Toph's metalbending is a fact of the episode, any speculation about why or how she can bend it is another matter. Therefore, you can't suppose she's bending the carbon in the steel or whatever. Well, you can, but putting it on Wikipedia first is not appropriate. FrozenPurpleCube 23:34, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Avatar state / Avatar: Escape from the spirit world

You'll have to excuse me for this rapid subject change: Despite the title, my query is about the events taking place in ¨Avatar escape from the spirit world¨and its effect on some related articles, not just the avatar state page. Is there a reason that the newest information learned in this `web comic` hasnt yet modified the articles having to do with the avatar state? The creators said it was cannon with the show's story so it stands to reason that the articles should be modified. Information included is that the avatar state was indeed blocked or fractured after Aang was hit by a lightning bolt while in it, which is still pretty important even thought it was learned through a web comic, another is the whereabouts of princess Yue. This might not be the right discussion page to bring this up, but the discussion on the avatar state page is simply non-existant. Think this was touched on in the later archive thingie. If ya take a good look around, you'll see that the event thingie has been applied to certain articles, including that of the season 2 premiere episode "The Avatar State". In relations to the Avatar State page, much like that non-existant discussion page, you could always just do it yourself. ~Father's Wish 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Nationality Symbols

See here's the thing, for the main and secondary characters, we've got the symbols mixed up. Their info box thingies currently display the bending symbol, not the nationality symbol. Ex: Jet's symbol is 40px, when it should be that Chinese coin symbol thing- thumb|200px|left|Earth Kingdom National Emblem. get what I mean? 25 March 2007 (UTC) ---But technically Jet is from the earth kingdom, and the earth symbol represents...well earth kingdom natives, at least thats what i was led to believe...what would be the symbols for the other nations? Yes, Jet is from the Earth Kingdom but...as Father's Wish was saying that symbol is the Earthbending symbol rather than the national symbol as said in the characters' infoboxes. I do believe those should be changed for the fact that in the infobox it states..."Nationality" and therefor the nation's symbol, rather than their bending symbol, should be placed in the infoboxes. Older/Younger Sister?

"Zuko (Dante Basco) is the exiled 16-year-old prince of the Fire Nation",

"Azula (Grey DeLisle) is the 14-year-old princess of the Fire Nation, Zuko's older sister"

I've only seen two episodes so I'm not in the know, but the obvious contradiction here is that his "older" sister is two years younger than him?

Opinion?

More or less. As the quotation marks indicate, it actually links to an critical review of series' aspects, in this case, the characterization. Also with something like character description, a lot of its gonna invetibly retain an opiniated air. Father's Wish II 9 April 2007 (UTC)
While it is an opinion, it is a sourced opinion. That line was their when this article was made a Featured Article and no one objected to it because that is said, more or less, in the cited article. The Placebo Effect 00:09, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Question about Aang's look

Sometime ago, someone added a brief sentence to Aang’s trivia section stating that he looked very similar to the comic book hero Red Tornado, whose first appearance was in 1968. It was promptly removed from the page without a reason. I didn’t really think anything of it at first, but when I went to the Red Tornado page I was very surprised. The character has a bald head adorned with an arrow and his power is to create tornadoes (control the wind). I doubt even if the creators where inspired by this character that there would be anything to document it. However, I think the similarity is worth noting and keeping on the Aang page. Thoughts? Gee I wonder who it could've been. Anywho, m'kay see the thing is, Mike and Bryan have already provided their orgin for Aang in that Nick Mag Presents article thingie,[4] to say the least, it had nothing to do with the Red guy. I mean as stated all over, Zuko exhibits eerie similarities with Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto but as much as some would like to, we're not gonna put it down cause its pretty much plain old coincidence. It just says he took a sketch of a middle-aged man with an arrow on his head and made him a kid. It doesn't really explain anything at all. I know we can't blatantly say this is where the idea came from, but the similarities should be noted. Red Tornado even has suits with lines running down his arms and legs. So we’ve got a bald character with an arrow on his head, lines on his arms and legs, and can control the wind. Huh, funny, seemed pretty dead-on to me. Bryan took one of his old doodles, tweaked it a bit, and turned it into a charater. That's like the origin of 99.9% of all fictional characters. Either way, unless there's a source that explicitly states that Aang's creation was based off the comic book guy, which the brief interview suggests against, its a no go. "Too much of a coincidence," that's nothin compared to some of the stuff out there. But anyway this really should've just gone on Aang's discussion page. Unfortunately, the Nick Magazine article doesn't answer a question about Red Tornado. I could argue that Red Tornado looks like a middle-aged balding guy. What we really need is them being asked about the similarity in a more direct manner. Or somebody else saying "Hey, Aang looks like Red Tornado" preferably in a source like Wizard Magazine or some such. The same could apply to Zuko and Sasuke. Movie adaption

I was reading about the movie adaption and saw some new information was added, and I don't know about anyone else but this just seems like more of a personal statement and original research.

"This newfound information comes as a relief to many fans who feared the live-action movie may significantly diverge from the original storyline."

Personally my fears with the live-action is the loss of the anime-esk style that the show has. Either way the information is not cited in the article, and I am removing it as such.--Azslande 03:58, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Agreed. I'm a fan, and I'm still worried they're going to mess it up... Like I've heard they want to compact the first season into one movie, which means they'll probably end up butchering the story regardless of their intent...

Appa and Momo

I was looking through the page and saw that both Appa and Momo were on the secondary character list. This is quite perplexing as both appear quite often in the show. Appa has been in practically every episode, except for the ones when he was stolen, and Momo since he first made his appearance. If Azula who is relatively new and has not been in as many episodes as both are main characters than both Appa and Momo should be as well ESPECIALLY Appa who is integral to the history of both Airbending and Aang. Wasn't Appa in the main characters section at one point? Either way I think Appa belongs in the Main Characters more, so than in the secondary characters. Appa does actively contribute to the story line. First of all there's the whole story arc where Appa is kidnapped. He had a whole episode to himself in the form of Appa's Lost Days. Appa has also been important in several fight scenes. Appa was the only reason Mai and Ty Lee weren't victoius in both their battles against Katara and Sokka[Which is only one of many examples]. In the long run Appa has probably had as much influence[If not more] as Azula[Who is apparently a main character] has in the storyline. Plus as already mentionned Appa played an important role in the history of Aang, Avatar the Last Airbender's overall main character. Momo I can kind of understand being secondary, seeing as he doesn't have much influence in he plot, he seems to minly be there for occaisional comedy relief.
This was a big issue several months back when Season 2 was still airing...I'm not quite sure how it ended (though the result is most likely the way it is now), but it was long-winded and almost unneccessary...leave it how it is for now, in my opinion; maybe something will happen in Season 3 to change it. Indirectly influenced by another animated tv show

I just recently added the following info to the Shaolin Soccer page (which I have renovated greatly). Please note I changed the citation format so people can access them easily on this page:

According to an interview with Premiere Magazine, Chow stated, "Actually the "over the top" CG and kinetic soccer moves were an inspiration that came from a classic Japanese anime called "Captain Tsubasa". The animation was very big in Hong Kong over ten years ago when it sweeped kids of all ages and even adults loved it. It has a cult following in Europe as well. But it was only possible with pen and ink back then, now with the advent of CGI, it can really be done....(the idea of combining it with Kung Fu was in my head for many years but we had to wait for the CG technology to mature)"[5] Captain Tsubasa was an animated television series that ran in Japan from 1983 to 1986.[6]

The "Asian film" section of the main article claims Shaolin soccer was an inspiration for the "bending movies" used in the show. I think it should be noted that this show was indirectly influenced by Captain Tsubasa. (Ghostexorcist 20:24, 26 May 2007 (UTC))

Kindof a stretch there dontcha think? All of the shows, movies, concepts, etc that Avatar derives its influence from conspicuously each drew their own inspiration from another source. The various sources that can be drawn from the references peppered throughout the six episode FLCL alone is enough to merit its own article. Anyway, if we brought out this "indirect influence" notion, this page would get filled up in no time, primarily by things that quite possibly have absolutely nothing to do with the creator's original intentions. It's not a stretch in the least. Some of the bending moves where derived from moves in Shaolin Soccer. These, in turn, were derived from moves in Captain Tsubasa. I think this should be noted if only in a single sentence. After the quote stating the creators like Shaolin soccer, all you would have to type is "Shaolin soccer was inspired by the soccer anime Captain Tsubana." (citation) Simple and to the point. New SEASON

IT IS MAY 13 AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN THE NEW SEASON IS STARTING, Can anybody tell me?

  • You dont really suppose they would keep us waiting that long do you. They will loose to many fans with the bunches of nick shows premiering this summer anyway. And there voices would have changed some what over 11 months. But whatever, i'm loosing interest in it sorta anyway. I'll still watch it but, may need to find something else to keep me occupied. I'm probably not the only one. Maybe it will premier late summer. Maybe around summers end ehem (When sozins comet arrives.

4 More Seasons of Avatar

I want to add that nick signed on for 3 additional seasons of avatar after season 3 meaning seasons 4-6. Thanks for listing this! I was hoping for at least four seasons ("Winter, spring...summer and fall...Four seasons...". ) So, Book 4 will obviously be called "Air" and take place in the fall, since each season is related to the four elements: 

         Winter = water
         Spring = earth
         Summer = fire
         Fall   = air

And, notice that that Book 1: Water premiered in the wintertime, and Book 2: Earth premiered in the spring of last year. That may mean that Book 3: Fire may premiere within the next three months! Oh yeah that old thing. The article, not the regurgitated fanny idea/concept. Well as its been said in several places, particularly Avatar-related forums, you'll notice that all it says is that Nick is more than ready to accept more seasons of Avatar (believe or not the guys are aware of ratings) and its still, yes still up for simply consideration by the creators. That said, if you really read the thing, coupled with a few other sources and quotations from the co-creators, they've pretty much said, "Yeah it be nice, but we'd rather not." Actually, they said that they hope that us fans are as excited as we are about this. It also says that Book Three will come out this summer, but I've known magazines to,for example, list a celebrity's age wrong, too, so only Nickelodeon and the creators know for sure. Lemme try and lay it out. According to the interviewer, put some focus on that line, Nick has appearantly ordered and are more than ready for 3 more seasons of Avatar (once again, these guys are aware of the ratings it pulls in). However, those three 3 seasons don't happen unless the creators say so. What with the fact that they're the ones, ya'know, creating it. In multiple interviews and conferences, the co-creators in turn are have stated that they're still considering it but have also expressed that they'd rather not, instead opting to direct their focus on the movie trilogy that is to flesh out over the next couple of years. One of the staff members at the Avatar Spirit site just answered my email to him/her about this matter. According to the email, the interviewer "manipulated the question". Book 3: Fire is supposed to be the end of the story, and the creators will move on to live action movies based upon the series. This is what the creators told the site. Suggestion of 'Battles' tags into the Avatar information...

It is a war after all, and we have seen at least three battles so far, and there are a long list of battles. So, being an encyclopedia, a catalogue of the various battles in Avatar should be chronicled.

September 25th, 2007?

Someone has placed this info in this article as the premiere date for season 3. However, I doubt this is true. Take a good look at the date of the article. It says September 2006. Aang's Possible Firebending Instructors

It's to my concern that Aang has come across few Firebenders who will teach him. Perphaps the deserter Jeong Jeong will return in the series to become Aang's teacher. Any thoughts anyone? Eenyminy 16:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, to your first note, any guesses to his firebending teacher would be considered speculation and thus can't be on Wikipedia. (Although my thought is that its probably going to be a new character, as Toph was or if not then Iroh.) But like I said that's speculation and so has no point to be added into the article until his teacher is confirmed.

Recently removed section

The following text was added to the article, then removed because it wasn't cited. I like it; it's fairly well-written, and would probably make a good addition with some tweaking. Hair, Make-up & Costumes

The hair, make-up and costumes of the Four Nations are generally modelled after various traditional Asian styles of dress, with much mixing and matching as well as re-designing.

The Earth Kingdom possibly shows the greatest diversity because it consists of many different regions. The female warriors of Kyoshi Island wear the Kabuki-like make-up of traditional Japanese theatre, while many men in Ba Sing Se adopt the Manchurian custom of wearing a queue as required during Qing Dynasty China. The traditional Korean Hanbok have also been worn by women in an Earth Kingdom village (first appearing in the season 2 episode "The Cave of Two Lovers").

The Northern and Southern Water Tribes usually have and wear parka-like clothes resembling those of the eskimos and other peoples living in polar regions. But while Katara wears her hair in more traditional "hair-loopies", Princess Yue wears her hair in elaborate arches-- which later fits in with her shoulder-baring costume reminiscent of Tang Dynasty China when she becomes the Moon Spirit.

The monks of Southern Air Temple shaved their heads and wore saffron robes similar to those worn in the Northern Buddhist traditions. The warriors of the Fire Nation usually tie up their hair in topknots, while Zuko (in season 1) has actually worn it in the traditional Japanese Chonmage fashion. There may be other styles of hair and dress which have not been shown because seasons 1 and 2 primarily took place in the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes.

September/October start date?

According to the Avatar Spirit site (www.avatarspiritmedia.net/index.php), there will be an all-Avatar edition of Nickelodeon Magazine for September/October, with previews of season 3. Perhaps this is when season 3 will start, or the issue will have the date. Either way, we'll know soon. Should we mention this in the article? --Freespirit1981 23:12, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

It's obviously speculation that this coincides with the start of season 3 ignoring other sources that are not allowed to be used as sources for Wiki. This will not be put in the article. -Dylan0513 19:35, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
