Um, why does this article exist?[edit]

I am a Baca, and may i just say how much i appreciate this article! Thanks so much to whoever wrote this and whom continued to add such valuable info!!!

Purpose of the Baca Family article[edit]

I created this article with the intention of giving a basic overview of Baca family history. The Baca has been a part of New Mexico for over 400 years. As such, it must be understood that this family is immense. It is not possible to mention every family or even more than a few generations of this family. Therefore, do not expect this as an end all for your family research or a place to put your personal family history. There are plenty of places on the Internet where you may add your family's genealogy. You may even want to try creating your own family website.I did!

Intended future updates[edit]

I will add more historical information to this article as I do a little more research. Historical items I intend to add include:

early family history
origin of the surname
this misconception that Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vacawas the progenitor of the family
other misconceptions about the family genealogy and history

I will also create separate articles that will link to this page, such as:

Possible origin of the Baca surname[edit]

The section on 'Possible origin of the Baca surname' is confusing; is there a separate origin for the Baca surname, different from the title/surname Cabeza de Vaca? I have trouble believing the unattributed second point in that section; the story of the Cabeza de Vaca name from the Battle of Tolosa is well-attested and familiar. But why would someone unrelated get the same strange name a mere twenty years later? It doesn't ring true. The lineage in NM might not descend from Alvar Nunez but it's hard to believe that they don't have a common forebear, no? Penalba2000 (talk) 05:44, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why there are no intenal links on individual names[edit]

Most of the people mentioned on this article are, by themselves, of little interest to the general reader. There is no reason to create separate articles for them, and therefore there is no reason to create an internal link to a non-existing article. Additionally, I found that if internal links are put on their name, it may link to an article that has no relevence to the person in question. This may lead to misconceptions. For instance, check the Francisco Pacheco link. It is about a Spanish 16th painter. This has nothing to do with Francisco Pacheco, the father of Ana Ortiz.

Removed "Genealogy" category[edit]

I removed the "Genealogy" category from the page because a family name page is better suited for the subcategories "families" and "surnames." "Genealogy" is too general. Abqbobcat 15:28, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for posting this First family of the Americas[edit]

The Bacas can been seen as the one of the first families from Europe to colonize the U.S. long before the pilgrims. In fact the Onate settlement is being seen now by Historians and Anthropologist as the site of very first Thankgiving. I have been researching the family for some time and the connection between Francisco Pacheco Bocanegra is becoming clearer.

There have been new discoveries found recently by myself other genealogists that confirm that not only is it probable that Francisco Pacheco Bocanegra is the progeniture for Ana Ortiz and her family but indeed confirms Francisco Pacheco Bocanegra as previously thought for over 300 years.

There are several original Spanish documents in the Ministry of Madrid Archives which indicate that Francisco Pacheco his daughters and his wife are the same family. In addition there are diferent dates of birth for Francisco Pacheco Bocanegra than the ones currently written as accurate. These new dates verify that Francisco Pacheco Bocanegra was indeed old enough to not only be the father of Ana Ortiz but the progenitor for the Baca clan. Only a little more research is needed as challenges to the new dates will no doubt be challenged again by sceptics. My hope to finially put the sceptics to rest regarding this illustrious family.
