Deletion?[edit]

This article does not reference sources and contains false information. The School of General Studies does not grant a 'BGS' degree, rather it grants all degrees that Columbia University grants, i.e. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Also, a quick check on the Website of CALMAT shows that there is no such degree there either. I'd propose deleting the article. —Preceding comment added by Djupp (talkcontribs) 05:02, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know much about how General Studies fits in at various institutions around the US or other countries, but I agree this article is indeed too specific to one institution and needs attention from a person familiar with the subject (complete with references). In at least one US State University system the degree is called Bachelor of Arts in General Studies. My parents taught at a State University where faculty called this degree "BAGS" (pronounced just like you'd say "shopping bags") and said basically two kinds of students got BAGS degrees: a small number who were deeply interested in a specific subject that does not fit into traditional academic categories, and a much larger number who just could not make up their mind what to study. Growing up I heard my parents having a number of conversations about BAGS students in their classes (my parents taught History and English) who lacked any discernible goals or direction. 71.235.194.82 (talk) 10:42, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BGS is not an Art degree.[edit]

A general studies degree is not an ARTS degree (or a SCIENCE DEGREE, for that). BGS is distinctive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.16.113.3 (talk) 00:27, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
