As far as I can make out, his legal name was "Baden Powell" (i.e. his first name was "Baden" and his surname was "Powell"). Was "Harry" a nickname, was he generally known by it, and if so was he called "Harry Powell", "Harry Baden Powell" or "Harry Baden-Powell"? Proteus (Talk) 22:35, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He appears as "POWELL, Rev. Prof. Baden" in The Powell Pedigree, From recollection he is called Harry Baden Powell in Adrian Desmond and James Moore's Darwin, but it's a book I borrowed out of the library so not to hand. ..dave souza, talk 23:27, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the register of the church of St John at Hackney, Middlesex, on 10 September 1796 he was baptised as plain Baden, son of Baden and Hester Powell.--Hors-la-loi (talk) 19:50, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Baden Powell (mathematician) is maybe better. I'm not very used to the English Wikipedia, so don't know he standard disambiguation. Moving to Baden Powell has the disadvantage that allmost everyone who types "Baden Powell" is looking for the son not the father --Egel 13:08, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monograph[edit]

Your readers might be interested to know that several years ago I published a monograph on Baden Powell: P. Corsi, Science and Religion. Baden Powell and the Anglican Debate, 1800-1860, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1988. The last part of the book reconstructs the debate on species in England before Darwin, and Baden Powell's role in it.

Pronunciation[edit]

When I studied theology at university (in a time when Baden Powell was not considered of low importance in Anglican circles), we were told his name was pronounced approximately as Bahdun Pool.
