Abilities[edit]

His "physical abilities" should not not include "punching through a wall." Knocking off plaster that is in front of a brick wall is... well, there is actually nothing easier than doing that. Mystery[edit]

Is there any indication that Barney could be based on Mystery_(pickup_artist)? Shares many similar traits, such as making up rules about picking up, teaching people to live, being interested in magic, using the term "wingman", stuff like that. Methulah (talk) 09:40, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article revamp[edit]

I just revamped the article with sources, per WP:RS and WP:V. I also heavily trimmed the amount of plot summary per WP:NOT#PLOT. The article shouldn't be so heavily detailed on minor plot points but should instead focus on the real-world notability of the character, with enough plot to make sense. Naming[edit]

No mention of his blog? Must have been a different article I was thinking of, wanted to add a source, the Chicago Tribune says Matthew Kuhn writers Barneys' blog. "Matthew Kuhn, who has written Barney’s blog for the CBS Web site for the past three years." Casting[edit]

FutonCritic has a transcript from a panel discussion after the 100th episode and Alyson Hannigan mentions Neils audition for Barney and how he bounced off the wall. I think this was mentioned in the article before (or possible one of the related articles and not this one) but removed for lack of sources. Unnamed sister[edit]

Redirect[edit]

Character doesn't meet WP:GNG - no significant coverage in independent reliable sources, and it isn't properly sourced. WP:PLOT also dictates that coverage of fictional entities should be concise, and this certainly isn't. The age of fictional characters[edit]

re: this edit. Please see the consensus at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Television/Archive_11#Age fields in fictional character infoboxes. Few points to take from it that can be applied here.

  1. Fictional characters are not real. They aren't born, nor do they die. They are born on-screen, i.e. during the first appearance.
  2. Stating that he was born in 1976, in reference to it being 7 years after the moon landing, is original research. As is "stated that he is 34 years in old in bla bla, hence making his birth year 1976." Stating that he was born 7 years after the moon landing might be okay, though it is borderline WP:TRIVIA. This could be eaisly checked as his birthday and age are mentioned in most of the series
  3. Only the basic facts to get an understanding about the character should be listed in the infobox.

L.A. Confidential[edit]

There is a mention of a Barney Stinson in the Novel L.A. Confidential (Chapter 9, mentioned by another character as a Hospital Orderly that sells drugs). Is this Barney named after that one? It just seems too unusual a name for it to be a coincidence (Which it could well be), have the writers ever said anything either way?(188.28.95.226 (talk) 01:42, 27 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Family life[edit]

In The Stinsons (S04E15), Barney hires actors to play his fake wife and child in order to make his mother happy. Considering the extent to which he went in order to give his mother what he thought she wanted, could this information not be included in either the Childhood and Family section, or right after an argument is made about whether or not he is "utterly devoid of morality"? “lemon law”[edit]

I removed a statement that the character has a "lemon law that applies to blind dates.” It frankly doesn’t make sense and is not a common usage of the term. The source [1] has "lemon law" in quotes as it is taken from the show and is an abuse of the term.

I suggest rewording to state directly that he believes it’s okay to leave at any point in a blind date, as the term is confusing and unimportant. --X883 (talk) 07:12, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

In the episode Natural History (S06E08), Barney says he was 6 years old when he knocked down the blue whale. When reading the file about the incident, the security officer states that the incident happened in 1981. This would make Barney at least 35-36. This is significantly older than the rest of the characters. He is older than the rest of the cast, seen in a flashback in the late 90's where he is in his mid twenties.
Guys, Lets face it, Barney is NOT fictional, he just feels fictional cause of how AWESOME he is. In the episode Of Course (How I Met Your Mother) it is said that in 2010 Barney had the age of 34. Which means he's from 1976 or 1975. His blog however states he's from 1976 (http://www.barneystinsonblog.com/about-me/) and as mentioned above another episode claims he's from 1975 or 1974. Possible inspiration for the character[edit]

In my opinion, Barney's character is mostly based on a character from Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece film, Magnolia. I'm talking about Frank T.J. Mackey (played by Tom Cruise); let's see: both show an image of a womanizer man, both have written books on how to flirt with women (The Playbook in Barney's case), and both have this personality created upon the lack of a solid paternal figure (eventually the two of them end up confronting their respectives fathers when they meet them after many years without a single notice from them).
