Removed the current teachers bit, seeing as Caroline Oxenham hasn't worked there for two years. More's the pity in my opinion, but there you go.

Comprehensive In Name Only[edit]

The original school had three sites: a Lower School on Romilly Road adjacent to what were Romilly Infants and Romilly Junior schools. This was unstreamed. Pupils moved up to the Middle School on Colcot Road, now Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morganwwg, which had years 2 and 3. The Upper School on Port Road has been rebuilt as Whitmore High.

Despite being a 'comprehensive school' once pupils were past the first year it effectively operated as a Secondary Modern and a Grammar School in parallel up until at least the early 80s. This was achieved by streaming pupils into A and B streams based on annual exam results and teachers' assessments (there was no transparency to this process). Subjects were considerably different between the streams, and there was a clear hierarchy of teachers (and pupils) between the two. The lower streams focused on CSE qualifications (but not exclusively), while the upper streams focused on GCSE 'O' levels, although a very few subjects were taken as 'combined syllabus'. It was possible to take 'out of stream' subjects, but this was met with some resistance (I had to argue hard to be allowed to take 'Geometric Engineering Drawing' as this was a 'Secondary Modern' subject). 80.7.168.14 (talk) 10:53, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
