1880 or 1883?[edit]

The lead section gives 1883 as the composition date, but the Lesure Catalogue lists it as one of his earliest works, in 1880. What is the source for an 1883 date? MJ (tc) 15:48, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Too many translations?[edit]

Five uncited translations with minimal context for why the different ones are needed seems excessive, especially since they're mostly very similar. The only reason I'm not cutting them back is I'm not sure which one to go with. I'm leaning to this other one, since it is actually citable, but if anyone with more background on the music or poetry wants to weigh in, please do. Several months ago I tried to reorganize these various translations and modify their descriptive headings, as it looked rather messy. Just now I fixed some of those descriptive headings for the different translations (for instance: a translation can't be more literal AND more colloquial, as those are opposites), and added specific "citation needed" tags to each.
I also deleted the one translation attribution "Translation G.Cugola 2018" that was originally attached to the "simplified" translation. Before I made my edits several months ago, that translation was listed first, as if it was the "official" one; I moved it to last place and labeled it "simplified", moving an unlabelled (no heading) translation to first place as it seemed to be a literal one. In my opinion, a literal translation should be listed first because it's the most helpful, followed by colloquial and more poetic translations. I've now just deleted the Cugola attribution as it's unverified and unclear who it is – it's not a properly cited source, just a person's incomplete name and a year.
I agree a source for each of the different translations should be cited (but I don't know any), but I think having several different translations is helpful, considering that different performers have used different ones (Barbara Streisand, for example), and they are at least differentiated by description (one being used commonly by choirs, etc.).
