Confusion over designations[edit]

The title for this article Bell XP-76 is quite wrong; the prototypes for this aircraft were the three XP-39Es. Had the Continental engine been fitted into production aircraft the designation would have been changed to P-76 to reflect this. There was in fact no XP-76. The wing sections chosen were not laminar flow, they were a thicker, symmetrical airfoil which were quite different.Minorhistorian (talk) 13:08, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
