Bellefontaine name[edit]
Bellefontaine is French; Belle means beautiful and fontaine means fountain or spring, together they mean beautiful spring which probably refers to the low lying area in Greer's Gardens near the end of Sunny Cove Road. A number of maps of Mobile Bay from the early 1700s show Bellefontaine, one of them from 1711 shows it as "Pointe Bellefontaine" located on the point just South of Bellefontaine (now known as Fowl River Point)suggesting the point was used as a navigation aid, or a landing spot for sailing vessels.
A 1718 map also shows Bellefontaine on the western shore of Mobile Bay, between Chataux Raw Chemut to the north and Raux Poular to the south. That would mean that Bellefontaine existed in 1718, only 7 years after Mobile had been moved to its present location.

Bellfontaine History[edit]
A group of Yamasee Indians lived near Bellefountaine in 1716 and operated a relay station for messages between Dauphin Island and Mobile. They moved there under French protection after a two year war with the British traders in the Carolinas. [1]

Carlos Lalanda bought a certain tract of land on the Western side of Mobile Bay in Bell Fontaine in April 1796 from a free mulatto woman named Mary Ann. Lalanda was Captian of the Mulatto Malitia in Mobile.[3] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.240.2.125 (talk) 22:49, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
