Regional Population[edit]

Bvskier Please leave the population alone. This figure of 160,000 is correct, Bemidji is the major hub for all of north centeral and north western Minnesota. This means the County population has nothing to do with the Regional population as the region accepted as part of the Bemidji Area includes parts or all of the following counties:Beltrami, Hubbard, Cass, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake Of The Woods, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake, Clearwater, And Mahnomen. This area also covers 2 Native American Reservations and One Native American Sovern Nation. White Earth and Leech Lake Reservations and the Sovern Nation of Red Lake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.2.186.54 (talk) 18:46, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is standard to use the US Census Bureau's regional statistics and not conjecture or private marketing population figures. The 160,000 figure is wildly inaccurate. Warrioman7 (talk) 04:12, 26 September 2018 (UTC) Census data is not used to determine Regional Centers, Please See proper Use of census figures and US Census website under additional documentation. Census data is used primarily to determine Government representation, at no point does the Census represent where people go to shop, be entertained, and so on. In fact use of the census data show that Major sections of the state have no center of activity. This kind of information is extrapolated by estimating population and comparing it to the number and distance of draw attractions, this is then compared to the estimated sales tax and over all retail activity for a given area. This information is then often times shared though networks such as The National Retail Federation. It is worth also noting that the Census Bureau only used Micro Statistical Areas for the first time in the 2010 census and is still adjusting the CSA boundaries for them. Example of issues with These defined areas and Regions is Bemidji itself. Bemidji sits only 2 miles from Hubbard county, Hubbard county is in the Brainard Minnesota CSA. Do you honestly think the largest section of that population drives the 100 miles to Brainard or the less than 5 miles to Bemidji for their day to day needs? Bemidji's CSA only includes Beltrami County, which also encompasses an entire sovereign nation which does not get counted in the US census. And if you really want to get the idea. ISD 31 Bemidji Area Schools extends outside of the CSA, and transports more than 6000 students daily. feel free to contact them directly! Any Further vandalism will be escalated. Warrioman7 you are wildly incorrect.[reply]

Spelling of the Ojibwe Name[edit]

Ase500, I'd be happy to discuss this orthographical dispute with you. I've already responded to you on my talk page as well as on your talk page, but you haven't answered me, so I'm trying here. I'd like to resolve this. Take care, --Whimemsz 21:39, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pronounciation[edit]

Beh-MEED-jee? Buh-MID-jee? BEM-ee-jee? Beh-MIDGE-eye? Beh-MIDGE-ee? BEEM-idge-eye? Help me out here... 172.167.87.35 (talk) 21:35, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Behm-EYED-jye? BEM-id-jee? BEE-mid-jee? Geez, does anybody know how to pronounce the name of this burg? This is embarrassing, guys! 172.129.143.141 (talk) 02:47, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to a pronounciation guide somebody added last month, it's pronounced something like "Boom-aj-ah-dee-ah", which I suspect is completely wrong. But nobody from Bemidji has come along to correct it, so who knows? 16:35, 3 March 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.133.71.212 (talk)
Bare in mind that in IPA the character <j> represents the sound usually written in English as "y". So the guide as stated is pronounced more like boo-ma-yah-dee-oh. Which is probably incorrect as well... --86.149.67.142 (talk) 16:49, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As a Minnesotan, I've always heard it pronounced buh-MID-jee. Some of those are very, very far off. Hope this helps! --Patteroast (talk) 23:00, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I live here, and it is normally pronounced "Bah-midge-ee". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.191.204.193 (talk) 00:51, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah uh... as a buh-mid-jee resident and a min-ah-sow-ta resident, let's get it right. -OttOO —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.17.197.208 (talk) 03:42, 2 October 2008 (UTC) i say it the same was as above. except the D in mid is rather overpowered by the J sound. Buh mi jee —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.17.201.80 (talk) 07:17, 5 March 2009 (UTC) I would say that Buh-MIDGE-ee covers it pretty well. Kinda rhymes with "the fridge, see?" ;) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lauriellen (talkcontribs) 19:00, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Climate?[edit]

No climatological stats? No winter pix? Sca (talk) 15:15, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: Just a quick edit on the climate as I realized the so called 1987 to 2016 period of data is actually the 1896 to 2016 period of data, which makes this city look way colder than it actually is. It is cold, but that period makes the yearly average low equal to Winnipeg, the coldest major Canadian City. I will edit the table to match the same sites 1981-2010 normals, just like almost all other climate tables on Wikipedia. Furthermore, I further updated the snowfall average. That was from the same source, but this one actually used the 1987 to 2018 data and plus I couldn't find any other data on it. 73.76.233.60 (talk) 04:48, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is this standard Wikipedia climate table which is very nice. However, as much as I understand that data are also mentioned in °F and inch, the internationally accepted units, even in the USA, are those of the SI, i.e. °C and mm (respectively cm for snowfall). I would therefore suggest that whenever data are presented the SI units be used primarily and any local units be placed in brackets. Mregelsberger (talk) 08:05, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Proposal[edit]

I propose that Paul Bunyan Mall be merged into the appropriate section of this article. This is due to the fact that most of the information in the new article is also found here. I don't think it has enough info for a complete article on its' own. What do you think? Swimnteach (talk) 19:55, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Needs Some Better Pictures[edit]

The old school Paul and Babe doesn't really represent the city that great. Get some better pictures please! Reedlander (talk) 06:37, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Bunyan connection?[edit]

The article mentions things related to Paul Bunyan a lot. What's the town's connection with him? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.78.31.156 (talk) 10:47, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As a person who grew up in Bemidji, went to high school and college in Bemidji, this article does not capture Bemidji to me.

I can't understand what the part about "Health Realization" is doing in this article. If people have been exposed to it, it is a secret to even to them. It makes Bemidji sounds like a city of scientologists.

More needs to be said about the culture revolving around the lake: fishing, boating, resorts, the parks (e.g. Diamond Point), the Water Carnival.

There also must be more to say about the high school and the university and its programs. Will Weaver is a nationally recognized writer and has a new movie out this year.

Everyone is happy about the curling success, but I am willing to bet that curling represents less than 1/1000 of 1% of the life thoughts and experiences of a lifetime Bemidji resident or visitor.

If Bemidji sports are going to be mentioned, then you have to mention Beaver Hockey which was a dominant force during the last two decades.

According to Wikipedia, Beaver Men's Hockey: 1983 - Div II Runner Up 1984 - Div II Champion 1985 - Div III Runner Up 1986 - Div III Champion 1993 - Div II Champion 1994 - Div II Champion 1995 - Div II Champion 1996 - Div II Runner Up 1997 - Div II Champion 1998 - Div II Runner Up

(Bemidji was also once the home of the Minnesota Vikings off-season training camp.)
