No Consensus to Merge at this time.

Proposal to merge Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice into Bering Sea Gold discussion area:

I propose that these two TV series articles be merged into one, since they share the same cast, crew, filming location, equipment, topic. Unlike Ice Road Truckers whose IRT: Deadliest Roads is truly a separate series, with a different premise, this isn't. Even then, at IRT, they share the same article. -- 76.65.128.43 (talk) 15:04, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice-series was aired as a documentary with no connection to the Bering Sea Gold-series. They are not mining the same way - as yes, part of the crews are the same, but it's a mess with those 2 series in the same article as it ruins the flow.. As an example.. There is 2 seasons ones, and Discovery haven't revealed any plans to even do more "seasons" of Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice. AeroByte (talk) 22:04, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If there are no plans for any additional seasons of Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice, what about making it season 1.5 of Bering Sea Gold? It would consolidate it in a way that makes sense and that also addresses concerns about messing with the flow. --CJ 23:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
I just looked at the Ice Road Truckers article, and agree that merging two shows that are so similar makes sense. --CJ 23:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
I dont think merging articles, just because they describe "similar" things, is the right thing to do. Making reference to Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice makes more sense. And if discovery decides to turn it into a series - which they might do, looking at the success of all their "gold-series", it would be an even bigger mess having those 2 series in the same article. So maybe await their plans and just keep reference to the Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice-show for now. At least that what i think makes the most sense - as, as i wrote, the Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice-series was always ment to be a separate documentary and not a part of the Bering Sea Gold-series AeroByte (talk) 23:11, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really have strong feelings either way, but it would make much more sense to mirror what has been done with Ice Road Truckers. Even more true if Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice ends up just being a one-off season. I suggest waiting until the end of the current season of Bering Sea Gold to see if a new season of Under the Ice follows. If not, then merge the articles.--CJ 13:56, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Yeah waiting until we know what happens makes sense imo AeroByte (talk) 23:17, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the IRT example, there's been 2 seasons of IRT Deadliest Roads, and those are different from the parent IRT, since they don't involve ice roads at all. However, here UTI is exactly the same as BSG, except that it happens in spring instead of summer. Even the Shamrock is a barge that can be used floating in the summer as well as on the ice in spring. They do the same thing under the ice as in the summer, with the same cast, crew, production people, network, equipment. They even need heated water for their summer diving as they do for spring diving. They mine the same plots as they do in summer for springtime. -- 76.65.128.43 (talk) 02:40, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just because someone decided that the 2 IRT shows should be in the same article, doesn't mean that the same should be the case for all series featured on wiki. Again, it really ruins the flow of the articles. AeroByte (talk) 21:52, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Season 2 has just been announced AeroByte (talk) 20:50, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reality[edit]

Lately i discovered that many of these reality series are actuality a hired cast of actors. Or, worse, they're semi real with real people but some drama being enacted. I saw some scenes that seem implausible. For example one guy washing and weighing his gold at home, out of sight from his diver, giving his diver only a small part of the 50% he deserved. Yet explicitly stating on camera that he's scamming his diver. If someone were to really do that they wouldn't blatantly confess on camera right? So i personally consider all these reality shows as fake unless proven authentic. I feel that every wp page on a reality series should clarify what the "reality" in reality series means. PizzaMan (♨♨) 10:11, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reality TV shows are a genre unto themselves, and the "scripted" portions of them have become an understood to exist element.CJ (talk) 21:58, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So the name "reality show" has become a misleading misnomer? I think shows with scripted portions shouldn't be called reality shows but rather something like scripted reality shows or pseudo reality shows. In essence anything scripted just isn't a reality show anymore, whether it's a dramatic soap series or a series about gold hunters. I started a discussion about this on the talk page of Reality television PizzaMan (♨♨) 08:56, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Season Numbering controversy.[edit]

An anonymous BT public access poster deleted a section that attempts to explain the season numbering debacle for this series. I'll take it one step further here in "Talk." The Torrent sites provide season and episode numbers. The Networks usually provide the starting year of the show and the number of episodes. The File Sharing sites (Torrents and Usenet) starting combining the summer and winter shows into unique seasons last year. A season is so many episodes in a year. Usually a summer season or a winter season. There is no official data FROM DISCOVERY NETWORKS that shows TV Guide is correct and although this is year 5, this is season 7. People are going to come here, think there is am error, and try to edit the page. Not good. Thus the reason I spent an afternoon of my life to put that section up. To prevent needless editing and confusion. NOT to prompt talk. The only thing that will iron this out is something directly and official from DSC.

The problem is that the Spring Mining Season (fall TV season) and Summer Mining Season (spring TV season) is separated into two separate articles, instead of being in one article with two sections, one for Under the Ice (spring mining) and one without. The details of the show are mostly the same, as with the cast. However, with 2016's ice mining season, they dropped the "Under the Ice" undertitle, so there's no actual difference anymore, since both shows are now just "Bering Sea Gold" -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 14:48, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bering Sea Gold: Under The IceBering Sea Gold

A proposal to merge Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice into this article results from a Requested Move discussion at Talk:Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice#Requested move 27 September 2016. As closer of that renaming talk, I consider myself an uninvolved editor and will notify involved users following the guidance at Wikipedia:Merging. If this new proposal is still controversial (please see 2013 proposal above) then it is suggested that the further guidance at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers also be followed. Please discuss below by using * '''Support.''' or * '''Oppose.''' followed by your rationale for or against this proposal. Thank you in advance for your participation!  Paine  u/c 02:43, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. I suggest that the restructuring of this article, as described in the afore-mentioned page-move discussion by User:RadioKAOS, be seriously considered here.  Paine  u/c 02:48, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment The show formerly called "Under the Ice" no longer carries that title. For the last two seasons, it's been called "Bering Sea Gold" while the companion show has always been called "Bering Sea Gold". The "two" shows have the exact same title for the last few years. No one would know what that "Under the Ice" show is about if they're recent viewers, since the show does not use that title anymore, and both shows use the same title now (if they were ever separate shows). "Under The Ice" originally was part of this show article before someone split the article in two and sent it here to "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice" 2013. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 10:23, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • MERGE These two "shows" do not appear to have ever been separate shows, but more like "Wipeout" and "Wipeout: Winter Edition", the same show with a modified name based on the season that is airing. There should be only one episode list, since no new viewer would ever know what "Under the Ice" is as this title is no longer used. The distinction between the "Under The Ice" and not under-the-ice should be described in the text of the article. "Under The Ice" and the current no-longer-called-under-the-ice seasons detail scuba dredge mining in the Bering Sea during the spring prior to spring-breakup (ie. "winter") which aired during the fall TV season. The non-under-the-ice formerly the only plain named seasons covered the summer-autumn mining season in open water (ie "summer") which aired in the winter-spring TV season. The crews, miners, teams, equipment was largely the same for both ice season and non-ice season. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 10:29, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per arguments above, particularly the IP directly above this comment. The shows are one and the same, one simply had a subtitle to differentiate that it was the winter season, and the subtitle is no longer used. InsertCleverPhraseHere 10:43, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge as above. This is the same show and doesn't benefit from separate articles.--Cúchullain t/c 12:35, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose merge on the grounds that the Bering Sea Gold is already at more than 100k in length, and the 'under the sea' article has a set of long tables which would make this significantly longer. Hence, while discussing them on one page would be reasonable in terms of one coherent subject, the results would be be too long or "clunky". Klbrain (talk) 08:49, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's not a good reason not to merge, since the two topics are not distinct. Instead the articles should merge and then split apart again, with a list of Bering Sea Gold seasons, like how other TV show articles work, where the bulk of the per season information is left on a separate list article. That also neatly solves the problem of excessive size, since we'd have to do that anyways, because of the current size of this article. -- 65.94.42.168 (talk) 07:19, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
List of Bering Sea Gold episodes. – wbm1058 (talk) 16:57, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How do you propose to number the episodes? IMDb seems to maintain them as two separate series. If we merge them then we have inconsistent season numbering with sources that don't merge them. Discovery Channel shows two seasons, 9 episodes? wbm1058 (talk) 17:59, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just number them in a per season basis. There is no need to number the episodes in a cumulative basis. Numbering the seasons would just be the sequential number by airdate: so fall 2016 comes before winter 2017, etc -- 65.94.40.222 (talk) 05:44, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. As already stated by others, these are maintained as two separate shows, pretty much everywhere else that makes reference to them, including Discovery's own official show websites. If you merge the two and number the episodes on a per-season basis, it will still cause confusion as you will either have two Season 1's and two Season 2's or you will have 12 consecutive seasons, 10 of which will not match the official season numbers published by Discovery (and everyone else).
Discovery, IMDB, Epguides, and TheTVdb ALL maintain that there are 10 seasons of "Bering Sea Gold" (season 11 is rumoured to be launching on March 30th 2019), which do not include the two seasons from "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice".
The data relating to "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice" is not quite as consensual, since IMDB and TheTVdb appear to have errors. Discovery, however, lists it as a show in it's own right consisting of two seasons. Surely then, the correct information is that which is provided by the network that makes the show?
If this is all merged into one single article, the article should still treat "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice" as a separate but related show, with it's own season list and an explanation that it was merged into "Bering Sea Gold" after its second season.
The whole point of Wikipedia is to provide factual information, not to manipulate that information into a format that a particular editor or reader might find more pleasing for whatever reason.

Why hasn't this been updated since 2016?[edit]

We're in season 7 now...? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WBJ71 (talkcontribs) 09:34, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's been edit warring over editors on what article is what, since the two current articles are not distinct topics, and people were updating randomly across different articles, because the real name is "Bering Sea Gold" while we have two articles on the same thing, so people gave up. The 2016 merger needs to be completed. -- 65.94.42.168 (talk) 05:38, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Season number debate revisited - Season numbers do not match the official show website.[edit]

The Anonymous post titled "Season Number Controversy" claimed (without citation) to have used torrent sites and usenet as sources for season and episode information. While this may have been the only available source of data at the time it was posted, Discovery do now have the correct information on the official show website and it indicates that the current Wikipedia page is incorrect[1]. Discovery list the 2018 season as Season 10 and each season is numbered only once, so the current Wikipedia format (Season 4, Season 4 ICE etc) is incorrect. Other reliable sites such as TheTVdb[2], Epguides[3] and IMDB[4] also back this up with their season / episode numbering formats. Merging the seasons from the show "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice" has only compounded the discrepancy because these two seasons ARE technically a different show, despite having much of the same format. Discovery lists it as a show in its own right, as do TheTVdb[5] and IMDB[6] where it has its own unique show ID number. Treating it as the same show only complicates the season numbering further. As of June 2018 there are ten Seasons of "Bering Sea Gold" numbered 1-10 and two seasons of "Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice" numbered 1 & 2.

Additional Info: I have seen an announcement on a Dailymotion page that Season 11 will start on March 30th 2019, although this does not appear to have been confirmed officially by Discovery as yet. A post on one of the star's Facebook page (Reaper Mining) from February 2019 also teases that a new season is imminent.

Footnote: I'm new to Wikipedia editing so I don't know how to move forwards with getting the page corrected and the shows un-merged, so I felt it best to post the relevant information here on the talk page in the hope that someone with more experience will pick this up and correct the errors appropriately. Apologies if I've gone about any of it the wrong way, I'm still learning how this all works.
