According to the England & Wales Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005 database (which I can access online at Ancestry.com), Ernest Whewell married Elizabeth Smith in Bury in 1939. So, presumably, that was her birth name. If anyone can find a good secondary source, it could be added to the article (but not until then, I assume).
