Ideas for improving, adding or linking to an article that represents the Dine[edit]

Dear authors,

I agree with wikidemo for article improvement. I would like to see written how the impact that Black Mesa has historically and culturally affected the communities be included. For the Native communities there are yes economic 'implications' in regards to private corporations on Indian land, and the economic 'poverty' status of reservation peoples, but there are also environmental, devastating health concerns and issues, cultural and religious. In addition, the controversial intertribal political status regarding such impacts are various and intriquing. An illustration of the modern and traditional world views regarding these topics from the given communities can be illustrated for a more broader comprehension of the controversy at hand. In addition there is work being done regarding the repercussions of the impacts for the communites that would be good to acknowledge as well. If you want just the 'controversy' stated and feel that a link to another article that addresses these topics more appropriate, perhaps we can start one?

Ideas for improving the article[edit]

Maybe we should consider renaming this. It's not a debate, it's more of a scandal (or an incident of corruption). The Black Mesa mine is such an important thing to the Navajo and Hopi nations that this subject deserves fuller treatment.

It would be useful to add information about how the corruption was hidden / denied for many years despite some protests and advocacy, and how it finally came out (who admitted to it, how, when, why, the documents that demonstrated what really happened). If we expand the article we might also explain what the controversy was about - not just low pay but also depletion of resources, concern about environment and aquifer, and affront to beliefs. Though on the other side, of course, it brought much needed income and jobs. Perhaps all of that is in the main article about the mine.

Capitalization[edit]

Just a note - I think "Hopi Tribe" and "Navajo Tribe" should be capitalized. As used here these are distinct jurisdictions (quasi/semi nations), and the term also is used to stand for the governments of the tribes. By contrast the word "tribes" (lower-case t) is a descriptive ethnic / cultural term that is used to refer to the people of the tribes. For lack of a better analogy, consider the difference between "Village people" (people who happen to reside in a particular village, in this case Greenwich Villiage, and the Village People, a distinct trademark / band name / corporation, etc., of a defined group of people that purports to represent them in some way. In the case of the coal mine, an agreement was negotiated not between the company and the tribe as a cultural entity or group of people, but between the company and the indigenous governmental body that ostensibly (and for American legal purposes) represented the tribe as a jurisdictional body. - Wikidemon (talk) 21:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
