Opposition Parties Dispute Resuptes[edit]

According to the article on the 2023 Nigerian Presidential Election, "Abubakar, Obi, and Kwankwaso rejected and vowed to challenge the results." Several sources on that page and an interview from today's Democracy Now. Seems like it deserves a mention on this page as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.210.106.161 (talk) 21:41, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the Guardian saying that he's 69 today. Here's Legit saying the same thing. I don't know what's causing all this disruption today, presumably there are some rumours flying around social media in Nigeria to say that he's a different age, but anyone wanting to change this date is going to have to come up with a pretty solid source. GirthSummit (blether) 15:36, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Girth Summit: you might find this article amusing: https://www.thecable.ng/wikipedia-locks-tinubus-page-for-persistent-vandalism-after-age-is-edited-84-times, if you haven't already seen it before. Congrats on the newfound fame. ‑‑Volteer1 (talk) 07:23, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Volteer1, crikey - that's a first (as far as I know...).
If any Nigerian journalists are reading this, it wasn't the changes that were flipping between 79 and 69 that I considered to be vandalism - it was the ones saying that he was the oldest man in the world, or a newborn baby. Someone who really believes that he is 79, and makes that change, is acting in good faith and is not a vandal (although I would still revert their edit because we require reliable sources for our content); changing it to something silly is vandalism though.
Also, it's not true that members of the public cannot edit the article - anyone with an account more than 3 months old, who has made more than 500 edits to the project, can make changes, and as can be seen from the article history, Nnadigoodluck, an experienced editor from Nigeria, has made lots of constructive edits to it since my protection was applied. The protection just stops unregistered users and brand-new accounts from changing it, since that is how vandals usually target articles. Age Controversy[edit]

http://encomium.ng/tinubus-daughter-folashade-opens-up-on-iyalode-general-title/

Mr Tinubu who is seeking the highest office of the land decided to celebrate his 69th birthday. But people started doing the math and it wasn't adding up. His first Daughter is currently 54 years old. So that would mean that he had her when he was just 15 years of age. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.95.148.119 (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Having a child at 15 isn't exactly unheard of (for men or for women). This is just speculation though unless a reliable source discusses it - we're not going to change an article based on rumours. GirthSummit (blether) 06:48, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Today's Times of London says His age has not been verified, though there have been claims from 70 to 86..[1] Imo that gives reason to mention the debate about his age within the body (vs changing the dob in the lead and infobox). Solipsism 101 (talk) 11:36, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The cited source used for reference in that line is based on the conjecture of the author of the article and is not a statement of fact. Multiple issue and Verification templates[edit]

This article has a number of issues. First, it includes many statements which lack citations to enable verification; some seem little more than casual hearsay, many are irrelevant. Second, the lead is poorly organised. Third, the article itself has poorly organised sections; in particular the elements covering the subject's life before his successful presidential run. I will make some edits myself over time. Perhaps other editors can do the same over time?

Edits designed to enable removal of templates above[edit]

I will make a note here each time I make an edit, for now on the basis of WP:BRD. If other editors engage, I'll make my proposals here before editing. I encourage other editors to do the same. Bola Tinubu is an important world figure now and this article should be of a high standard. I am conscious that he will have many supporters and detractors; I am not Nigerian and have no personal interest. I hope we are able to improve this article through the application of Wikipedia policies. All the best, Emmentalist (talk) 10:22, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

I have tidied up the first para. The second two paras of the lead are quite seriously flawed; there are many claims with no citations. The content also seems quite random. I will leave the second two paras for now and move on to the main body, then come back and tidy up the lead. Other editors might well want to contribute in the meantime and I'll take those new edits into account when I improve the lead. Emmentalist (talk) 10:33, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Early Life and Education[edit]

I have edited this section to include a reliable source and exclude hearsay and unreliable sources. It is now quite short and there is clearly a need for more biographical detail; if other editors wish to put material back in, please ensure that it is supported by reliable sources. My own view is that a liberal position should be taken on Nigerian newspaper sources since it is very hard to fill out the biographical detail by relying on modest coverage in conventional sources, but inclusion should be taken on a case by case basis depending on the refernced report itself. Nigerian political websites should not be used as sources.Emmentalist (talk) 13:04, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Early Political Career[edit]

I have tidied up and removed material not supported by citations.

Governor of Lagos State[edit]

I have tidied up and removed material not supported by citations. I have left quite a bit of material in which is supported by relatively weak sources. However, I do not wish to over-edit content inserted in good faith by Nigerians - much of it is likely accurate. I feel that Nigerian editors could improve here.

Post governorship[edit]

I have edited this part very lightly and left in some content where a citation is required. The content is, to my own limited knowledge by other means, correct. Perhaps Nigerian editors can find appropriate source/s? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emmentalist (talkcontribs) 08:23, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

President Elect of Nigeria[edit]

I have left this section untouched. There is room for more relevant content, imho. Emmentalist

Controversies[edit]

I have removed this section altogether. In general, 'controversies' sections in biographies are a lazy way of including material which should, if relevant, be included in earlier sections. They often include non WP:NPOV material too, or material presented in a non WP:NPOV way. Both applied in this case, imho. Moreover, some of the material was either petty, outdated or poorly sourced. I am not suggesting that none of the material does not belong in the article; but I urge editors who might consider re-insterting the material to do so in the main section and only where supported by solid sources. Emmentalist (talk) 08:54, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life and Chieftancies[edit]

I have merged these sections and otherwise have made no other edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emmentalist (talkcontribs) 08:57, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

I have returned to the lead and tidied it up. The lead was partly referenced and partly not, so for consistency I have removed references and tried to ensure that the content is referenced in the main body. I have also removed some content which is covered in the main body. The size of the lead looks proportionate now, imho, although it may increase as the content expands during Tinubu's presidency.

End of my edit and removal of tags[edit]

I've finished my edit, as laid out above, and feel it is now appropriate to remove the tags. The article is better structured and poorly referenced material, including material not WP:NPOV, has been removed. The article is not perfect, but it is a decent base for development now. The subject will no doubt justify many additions as his presidency progresses. I have taken a liberal line on Nigerian media references which might not otherwise pass muster. This is because I am conscious that while the Nigerian media varies enormously in quality, sometimes in the same publication, articles do often report fairly widely known facts which are not picked up by regular good quality Wikipedia media sources. I am conscious that WP:Reliable Sources is heavily biased (in the statistical sense) to Western/Northern sources and feel that Nigerian editors are often best placed to take articles/sources on a case by case basis. I will not edit further as other editors improve the content (I hope Nigerian editors); I will look in again in a while. Perhaps I should conclude by saying that I think there is a place in an article like this for an editor not close to the subject (I am not Nigerian although I do have experience of Nigeria, if I may put it that way) to help improve the broad structure and style of the article, and perhaps help adjudicate content, those best placed to edit this article are certainly Nigerians living in Nigeria. Finally, finally, I would ask non-Nigerian editors not to automatically delete material which is not sourced from the WP:Reliable Sources list, but rather to judge each case on its merits. There are many decent journalists working in Nigeria, reporting without fear or favour; it's a matter of looking carefully at each source and sourced article and making a judgement (in discussion with other editors wherever possible). Anyway, enough from me. All the best, Emmentalist (talk) 13:37, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While I thank you for cleaning up parts of the page, these wide scale deletions cannot possibly be the only solution here. Especially the controversies section, those points were sourced and should have been placed in the "Governor" and "Post governorship" sections as needed. Meanwhile, a ton of other stuff you deleted is really important to their sections, either find a source for it or at least put that stuff in the talk page sections so someone else can. Watercheetah99 (talk) 22:03, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Watercheetah99 Thanks for this. As I mention above, my aim was to create an organised article for ongoing development; I think mainly Nigerian editors should take it from here. I agree with you about some of my deletions (and specifically refer to this in my 'controversies' section) - the trouble is it's hard to know which ones. Some of the deleted material could go into other sections, but it needs to be sourced and it needs to be in a way which keeps the article coherent and well-structured. Also WP:NPOV - very important. All my edits can be reverted, of course. I would recommend not simply reverting, where material is to be put back in, but re-writing then re-insertion (reverting is a crude tool and will likely simply put the errors and poor style back in - the reverse of throwing out the baby with the bathwater!). Finally, some of the 'controversies' material, in addition to being poorly referenced and structured, was petty and seems unlikely to stand the test of time. Tinubu will shortly be president of a major world nation and there will be far larger issues emerging in coming months and years. I should say that I am completely happy to help with an opinion where there is a discussion here about any particular change, if any editor thinks that might be helpful. Anyway, all the best with it. Emmentalist (talk) 08:33, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Following my last, I did look again at the deleted 'controversy' stuff, as @Watercheetah99 raised it specifically above and I want to pay proper respect to a Nigerian editor. My view is still the same. Some of the content refers to inquiries and allegations made many years ago with no reference to follow up or outcomes. In Nigerian politics (and elsewhere) it is not uncommon for opponents to make complaints which trigger inquiries which end up exonerating the person complained about. The purpose is often to create a sense of 'no smoke without fire'. Given how many years have passed, the inclusion of such material should be contingent on a full picture and this requires sources laying out the outcomes of such inquiries, with reliable sources. On a different point, The Sun (of Nigeria) is heavily used as a source; as I suggest above, sources not in the WP:Reliable Sources list might be used, but only sparingly and on a case by case basis. The Sun (of Nigeria) has much in common, not least it's masthead (and therefore an attempt to create a similar branding), with The Sun in England (and a separate edition in Scotland). It is not in general a reliable source. Another 'controversy', with similar sourcing, was an armoured car having made a delivery to Tinubu's house once many years ago. That's just gossip and such an absurdly minor occurrence that it conveys, along with it's previous status here as a 'controversy', the impression that it's inclusion here had a political imperative. Notably, this Wikipedia article it itself often used in Nigerian publications to illustrate something or other (never favourable) about Tinubu and othe politicians; this both creates a motivation to put material here which shouldn't be here and serves as a reminder for editors to edit carefully and within the Wikipedia rules. All the best, Emmentalist (talk) 11:58, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I understand that you are not familiar with the Nigerian context but then you either need to learn about it or leave major editing to other users. The Sun in Nigeria is a reliable news source, the 2019 bullion van scandal was a massive controversy at the time and was constantly brought up during this campaign, and the godfatherism section was sourced from non-Sun sites and would perfectly fit in the post-governorship section with a few edits. You mention the salience this page has had but fail to understand the potential implications of all of its 'controversies' being wiped from the page just days after he was declared victor. The page isn't helped by someone coming in and just deleting half of it instead of either fixing the problems or raising concerns so someone else can. Watercheetah99 (talk) 06:52, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Mate, as I keep saying, you are free to revert, re-insert or edit however you like. If there's stuff you think should be in there then put it in with appropriate sourcing and see if other editors have a view. I'm familiar with all of the things you mention, by the way. Re: leaving it to others, I also contextualise my editing above and would point out that before I edited the article was a mess. I described every single sectoin change as I made them and no-one at all passed any comment at the time. If we all left it to others all the time then there would be no editing. From my own point of view, it is better to look forwards than backwards; there will be many issues which arise during the presidency which will need putting in here. Anyway, enjoy editing and all the best, Emmentalist (talk) 08:50, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

'Controversies' section[edit]

This section had been edited out because it is badly structured, poorly referenced and far from WP:NPOV. It's been replaced in full. It would be helpful if a third opinion were given.

In respect of each sub-section:

1. Illegal operation of foreign accounts: This section notes that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) considered a complaint against Tinubu in 2007. There is no reference to the outcome. The complaint may have been wholly rejected. The use of "trial" (the CCB is not a court), in the absence of any supporting information about the function and role of the CCB, seems misplaced and designedly pejorative. It is common for governments and oppositions, in Nigeria and elsewhere, to raise complaints about political opponents with public bodies with political intent. Without any further citations to justify why and in what way this episode can reasonably be considered a "controversy", this sub-section gives the appearance of an attempt to smear the subject of the article.

2. Appropriation of Lagos Funds This section again has a pejorative title, yet notes that after a different complaint was levelled at Tinubu, he was entirely cleared. The central part of this section involves events unrelated to the title (and why is it 'controversial' that a plot to murder Tinubu may have existed?).

3. Political godfatherism and hooliganism This section again has a pejorative title and notes; "his role...was exposed" in a documentary. In fact, it's clear from the section that when Tinubu took action against the documentary makers, the documentary was immediately withdrawn. This, of itself, suggests quite the opposite of an exposure of wrong doing. The rest of this section is just gossip with no 'controversial' implications at all.

4. Use of bullion vans to influence elections Again pejorative, this section simply alleges that a security vehicle was once seen parked outside Tinubu's house. The section urges the reader, in effect, to infer that Tinubu was bribing people using money contained in the vehicle. But there is literally no justification for this implied criticism. There was no action by any agency whatever. If we are to infer anything from reports that a security vehicle was seen outside Tinubu's house, it would be that political opponents will have brought this to the attention of the relevant authorities who would have provided comment and perhaps an investigation. The lack of any reference to any evidence or subsequent action gives the strong impression that this section, like the others, are included here by political opponents.

I will leave others to judge whether this section should still be in, but at present I must say that I am disappointed that a fair effort to improve an article should lead to the immediate and crude re-insertion of some of the article's weaknesses, and without discussion here at that. 2A00:23C5:6429:601:DE9:615A:DEE6:95C3 (talk) 17:46, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of how they are currently written, each one of these sections has a varying degree of significance to Tinubu's political career. The first point could probably be a two sentence blurb in a different section but the other three play major roles in his career to this day; to remove all of these in their entirety just days after the election is a clearly bad move. If they aren't written well or need better sourcing, then rewrite them or find other sources - lazily removing key information does not help the page. Watercheetah99 (talk) 18:43, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How are they important? Especially number 4, that one is borderline tabloid. The sections do not describe any lasting effect on his career, so please elaborate on importance. Also, I changed the header of the first section to Alleged illegal operation of foreign accounts since it does not mention a result. QuicoleJR (talk) 14:22, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I made more NPOV edits to the headers. QuicoleJR (talk) 14:35, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The "Alleged illegal operation of foreign accounts" was a large scandal during his governorship (this and its resolution should get a few sentences in either the governorship or post-governorship sections); "Appropriation of Public Funds" has arguably been the biggest albatross around Tinubu's neck for years - less so about those shares and moreso about the AlphaBeta company (this info should be placed in both governorship and post-governorship sections); "Political godfatherism" is again very important to his post-governorship - he is known as the "Godfather of Lagos" for a reason as he's been the preeminent southwestern godfather for years (this info should definitely be in post-governorship section, it's arguably the most well known thing of his post-governorship though "hooliganism" is unfair to add to the header); and the Bullion van scandal might seem trite to an outside viewer but it was one of the biggest stories of the 2019 elections and effects Tinubu's political career to this day - it looks "borderline tabloid" because you are reading a single sentence isolated from the wider context (there is no fair or comprehensive post-governorship section that would omit this incident). Editors need to have some sort of understanding of the politics of the places they are editing about or mixups like this will happen. These points, especially the Appropriation and Godfatherism ones, are core to Tinubu's political career and omitting them days after an election looks awful. Watercheetah99 (talk) 17:14, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Response to third opinion request:
I have changed the heading of the section per WP:NOCRIT. Headings like "controversies" attract unnecessary one-sided POV additions thus we need to avoid that. As for the specific sub-sections, I think they should be discussed in accordance with WP:NPOV and WP:DUE because we can think of any conclusion. Capitals00 (talk) 00:10, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editor Morbidthoughts replaced citations regarding Bola Tinubu's drug-related money forfeiture in the US. The reason is stated as "inappropriate source for BLP". The Editor substituted the references with a BBC coverage which barely mentions the forfeiture. This is not a good-faith substitution. I'd like to suggest that, even if we accept the premise of the substitution and consider it done it good faith, there is a more credible, reliable, established and well-regarded replacement - https://saharareporters.com/2008/09/15/how-us-federal-agents-succesfully-linked-bola-tinubu-drug-trafficking-ring-chicago.

I don't understand the original complaint to link to this if it doesn't change the content and why they consider this publication is more credible than BBC or Bloomberg. Actually I do understand if it is because they are distrustful of international vs. Nigerian sources. However, I'm wary of the quality and political bias of Nigerian media. I would like to bring to your attention a potential inaccuracy in the article regarding President Tinubu. The current statement, "His government having cleared the legal hurdles of the opposition following the March election is generally accepted unopposed and has international legitimacy," appears to be misleading.

Contrary to this statement, the legality of his government following the March election is still being challenged in the PEPT court (Presidential Election Petition Tribunal) by opposition parties. There is strong evidence to support these challenges, indicating that legal hurdles have not yet been cleared.

I kindly request that the statement be reviewed and, if necessary, revised to accurately reflect the ongoing legal challenges and the fact that the government's legitimacy is currently subject to dispute.

I do not know how to cite sources here but any body reviewing my edit request can kindly tell me how to do it or check PEPT Case Nigeria and see for themselves

Thank you for your attention to this matter. 102.88.63.88 (talk) 17:42, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I will want to edit this bit: "Chief Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu GCFR (born 29 March 1952) is a Nigerian politician who is the 16th and current president of Nigeria"

The name Adekunle added to Bola Ahmed Tinubu's name is wrong and one of many fictitious names he bears. There has just been a concluded court case for the presidential elections and the name Adekunle was on his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate submitted to the court. This is the only certificate that bears such a name. The certificate itself is contentious as he had obtained it stating the NYSC had granted him an exemption for service (something that did not exist at the time he supposedly served).

The name A had also been contentious and was believed to be the initials for "Adekunle" in his NYSC certificate. The man known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always gone by the name Ahmed and never Adekunle. Also, there has been a disposition with the Chicago State University ([1]) and the school has proven under oath they cannot verify if as a matter of fact, the man who is the Nigerian president had, in fact, attended the school and also proven that he had forged the certificate he had used to run for office in 2023.

The world is being lied to about his identity and Wikipedia is known to uphold a certain threshold for the veracity of the information it holds. I would love to strike the name Adekunle out. It is not his name and the circumstances in which the name is being added is an insult to Nigerians and the people who will be reading to the man who had no discernable and traceable record until the age of 21. He has lied about his primary and secondary school education. This is proved by the documentation recovered under oath from CSU and one of the certificates used to obtain admission showed that he had attended the Lagos Government College and had graduated in the year 1970. The thing is, the school was founded in 1974.

It would be my utmost pleasure to set the records straight for a crooked history. Philipigbeka (talk) 16:50, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Court documents are not acceptable as sources in articles about living people; a secondary source will be needed for this change. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 16:59, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

However the Lagos state government website has "Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu"[5] and has done since June 2020.[6] The Wikipedia article has also used the same name for an equally long.time[7] All of this predates the recent controversy, so please provide reliable sourcing for your change. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 11:47, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
