Untitled[edit]

Politics section created to demonstrate long standing community polarity and shift due to demographics. Historical interest. Would really appreciate help finding references to voting patterns , I can't seem to find anything in the Stats-Can maze Wednesday vagabond (talk) 08:37, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article mentions that the island is used by First Nations people for deer hunting. Does anyone have any recent examples of this? I have lived here for 11 years, and while I *used* to see deer hunters from time to time (none of them First Nations, as far as I could tell), that was long ago. The municipality currently restricts hunting to licenced bow hunters only, and as far as I know there have been no recent licences issued. Should we perhaps change "is used" to "was used in the past"? Local sentiment (apart from annoyed gardeners) is pretty much against hunting on Bowen, I suspect.

Hi...Chris Corrigan here. I personally know of Musqueam hunters who hunt in Apodaca Park (and who access the land by boat) and I know of other very recent uses of the land by Squamish hunters. this is important becasue First Nations people are allowed to hunt in Provincial Parks, and the current use is in line with contemporary Aboriginal rights and title.


James Glave here. I obtained a hunting license on the island for the 2007-2008 season, and know of two others who did as well. Unsure of licenses applied for in the current season. There has been a strong anti-hunting sentiment dating back to enactment of the current bylaw, but based on recent exchanges on the bowen forum, I would say that the locavore movement is in part helping to swing the pendulum back the other way. While it is difficult to obtain a permit given the restrictions, it is certainly possible, and non-aboriginals do.

Wednesday vagabond's edits[edit]

Edits under Politics are occuring with no signature or time stamp. Late July 10 or early July 9th included an edit that wiped out all prior signature/time stamps and the editor's ip number. --Wednesday vagabond (talk) 14:41, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote a piece on the politics of Bowen Island which demonstrated the historical polarity of community with a current event. Everytime I posted someone would delete it. While I always left a time/signature stamp the editor who deleted my column never left a signature or time stamp but his/her ip address was posted once. Then this anonmous editor wiped out all my time/signature stamps and his/her ip address. I was blocked because it appeared there was an edit war happening (which I agree with). I also did not leave any reasons for edits here (my fault). The 3r's were also cited as a reason for blocking me and yes, I admit to trying to replace my post several times in one day when the column was continually deleted. A problem has risen out of the block and the anonymous editor's deletions - I had no way to reach consensus with someone who is anonymous with no trace. I was blocked from any discussions so could not appeal to the administrator (Ckatz) nor any other administrator. There was no appeal process open to me. Well first off, please don't sign and time stamp your edits to article pages. Those are for use in discussions such as this one, not to stamp everything you add to wikipedia. Also, if you find yourself reverting and counter reverting more than 3 times, it is best to stop altogether and discuss the disagreement here or on the other user's talk page. Now as for the material you kept putting into the article, I agree that a lot of it was not very suitable. The first bit ("Island politics have long been divisive between those who want small, managed growth, and those who care for larger developments. Since it's inception as a municipality, Bowen Island has had many an on-going battle between the two factions.") sounds like an opinion that can't really be demonstrated, hence unsuitable for an article. It is also unreferenced. Then you start talking about artificial turf. I could maybe see a brief mention of artificial turf, but you go on for 5 paragraphs about this seemingly unimportant issue. Wikipedia strives to avoid putting undue weight on a subject, and I think this is obviously a case of that. TastyCakes (talk) 16:20, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are several problems here. One, you were adding the material repeatedly, without discussion, even after it was removed by several other editors. This culminated in your multiple reverts a few days back. Generally speaking, if you find that your contributions are removed, it is time for discussion rather than reversion. Second, and perhaps more important, is that the contribution itself is problematic. It begins as a comment on the voting history of Bowen Island, but quickly devolves into an editorial-like commentary on one specific issue. Keep in mind that Wikipedia is not intended as a forum or public discussion site, but instead as n encyclopedic reference resource with a world-wide audience. --Ckatzchatspy 16:28, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I re-posted an article under Politics and the section was deleted once again. The editor doing this is anonymous so I cannot trace them to reach consensus. The anonymous editor also erases my time/signature stamp and does not leave one of his/her own. This appears to be an edit war. Previously I had not listed my reasons for re-posting under my discussion page. I did so earlier today and as always, left my time/signature stamp. I had also previously re-posted several times after each time the section was deleted, thus engaging in the edit war (not knowing all the rules and regs of Wiki). Ckatz, an administrator blocked me for this. Ckatz also disabled my ability to to persue other avenues of appeal besides consensus, thus leaving me unable to follow Wiki guidelines on the appeal process. Ckatz had blocked my ability to post on his/her discussion page or any other administrator's discussion page thus I could not appeal through a third party. I suggest that Ckatz allow me the right to reach consensus, appeal to Ckatz and appeal to a third party administrator and any other avenue of appeal.

The section I had created was 'Politics" which is a vital part of any community. The article written demonstrated the polarity of Bowen Island's politics by citing recent events that have divided the community. It also let readers know of demographic changes that have changed the face of how Bowen Island votes Federally and Provincially which is a historical change for the populace. --Wednesday vagabond (talk) 16:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While I appreciate that you are new to the site, I do have to say that your claims above are incorrect and overstated. No-one "disabled" your ability to appeal; you were blocked for 3RR and edit warring, simple as that. You were still able to post on your page, and the block was only for 31 hours. You (as with any contributor) are free to seek consensus, but that does not mean you resume the cycle of reposting the same text without addressing concerns raised here. --Ckatzchatspy 16:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article requires disambiguation?[edit]

I've reverted the undiscussed move because it was moved to the wrong title format. If this does require disambiguation, the proper landing place would be Bowen Island, British Columbia as this is primarily a community/municipality article, not a geographic feature article. Yes, I agree that the correct title should be 'Bowen Island, British Columbia'. Right now there's an endless loop: 'Bowen Island' takes you to the disambiguation page; and 'Bowen Island (British Columbia)' also takes you to the disambiguation page; and clicking on 'Bowen Island (British Columbia)' on the disambiguation page also just takes you back to disambiguation. There seems to be no way to get 'Bowen Island (British Columbia)' to load, so that I could move it to 'Bowen Island, British Columbia'. Boy.bowen, it appears from this that you are attempting a cut-and-paste move. This can't be done. See the note I just dropped on your talk page about that.

I am not convinced that an undeveloped island 1.1 km by 0.6 km off the coast of Australia, Bowen Island (Jervis Bay), is notable enough to rival this island municipality's notability and therefore challenge its current placement at this undisambiguated location. Instead, creation of Bowen Island (disambiguation) may be the more appropriate location for the dab page. If you want to move this article over the current Bowen Island, British Columbia redirect, you'll have to initiate a formal move request at Wikipedia:Requested moves. I think a disambiguation page is a little much for this. There's the Bowen Island in BC page and the Bowen Island in Australia page. The other two examples of a Bowen Island in Ontario and in the Philippines are unlikely to have pages in the future due to notability issues.
