There is a discussion of whether to use the commonly-used local names for stations in non-English speaking places or whether to our own translations at Talk:Praha hlavní nádraží, which is also relevant here. Wheeltapper (talk) 19:17, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Real name[edit]

I've put this article back to the previous, "real" name, as that is the name which is used (to the extent that Slovakian railway stations ever come up in discussion!) in English. See WP:UE, which is about using the name which is used in English, rather than about inventing a new English name if the non-Wikipedia anglophone world uses a non-English name. Praha hlavní nádraží is comparable. "Bratislava railway station" alone is unhelpful because there are a number of stations, and at least one other station is internationally significant (and some others have their own Wikipedia articles). We don't say "Paris railway station", "New York railway station", instead we use the actual names. Wheeltapper (talk) 21:26, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is your WP:POV, however, it is absolutely normal for many sources to WP:USEENGLISH when referring to foreign structures like stations, bridges, etc. It's not invention it's just sensible translation. Furthermore, if English Wikipedia is to be accessible to its vast readership, it needs to recognize that the majority do not speak Slovakian. So whilst everyone would understand New York railway station (it's English) and most might at a push understand "Gare de Lyon" (there isn't a "Paris railway station" BTW) because French is taught fairly widely, hardly any will get Bratislava hlavná stanica. If we insist on native names then Shanghai Railway Station will become 上海火车站 and then we really are in trouble. --Bermicourt (talk) 09:46, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is not my point of view, it is in the Wikipedia guidelines: see the content (not just the title of) WP:USEENGLISH, which states "The title of an article should generally use the version of the name of the subject which is most common in the English language, as you would find it in reliable sources". It does not state "create a new name where the English reliable sources use the name those Johnny Foreigner types use". You say people would understand "New York railway station", yet the article is at Pennsylvania Station (New York City) (and not New York Central station either). Few people capable of accessing Wikipedia are going to surprised that something in Slovakia has a Slovakian name, any more than they are going be confused by French stations having French names or Spanish stations having Spanish names or Czech stations having Czech names or Ulan Bator railway station not being called "Red Hero Victoria". Even stations in England, where English was invented, do not follow strict naming rules; would anyone suggest we rename Whittlesea railway station to match the town? If we insist on ignoring the real world in favour of devising new names then Manchester Piccadilly station will become Manchester Central railway station and then we really are in trouble!
