Possible common name issue[edit]

It is possible that the google hits for this name is what makes it exist - as far as geosciences australia has on its place name search - it does not exist SatuSuro 01:23, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is realistic to think that this WP page makes the term "Bunda Cliffs" exist. It is widely used on maps. Robin Whittle (talk) 08:33, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy of length and height figures[edit]

I am not suggesting that the following information be added to the page, since it constitutes original research. However I want to note that the figures currently on the page, do not look realistic to me. The page currently states "The Bunda cliffs extend for around 100 km . . . " and "The cliffs, which are some 60 to 120 metres high and shear . . .". Many other pages claim the cliffs are up to 70 metres high. For instance http://www.nullarbornet.com.au/towns/headBight.html . Google finds 26 pages for "Bunda Cliffs" and "90 metres". A few pages mention 100 or 120 metres.

This document: http://www.environment.gov.au/coasts/mpa/publications/pubs/gab-values.pdf mentions a 209 kilometre Nullarbor Cliffs Province from the Head of Bight to the Merdayerrah Sandpatch. That would include the sandpatch, I think.

It is easy to see the westernmost limit of the sheer cliffs - the transition between the plain ending abruptly at the cliff and the plain slope down to lower cliffs, is about about 27km (my estimate, from Google maps) from the WA border: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=-31.654514,129.289684&spn=0.034193,0.05167&z=15 Lynnwebb has a clear photo of this transition point: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/31287892 .

The easternmost end, where the cliffs give way to dunes is at the western end of the Head of Bight beach: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=-31.465513,131.131418&spn=0.008566,0.012918&z=17 . The eastern limit of the sheer cliff seems to be at a little bay (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=-31.47576,131.114201&spn=0.002141,0.003213&z=19) to the west of the main Head of Bight whale watching platform (a zig-zag walkway). Ian Berry has a photo from there of the easternmost sheer cliffs: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/17846717 .

I estimated this distance using the most detailed map I could find - the Carto Graphics 2006 Eyre Peninsula map. This depicts the eastern limit of sloping down features of the Merdayerrah Sandpatch about 27km east of the WA border. From the coast at the WA border to the Head of Bight viewing platform is 297mm, which is about 201.3 km. Subtracting 27km from this, I estimate the straight-line distance between the west and east ends of the continuous line of sheer cliffs is 174km +/- 1%. Following the coastline might add another one or two km to this.

So I am sure that 100km is too low, and that the frequently quoted ~209km figures include the ~27km of cliffs which are inland of the Merdayerrah Sandpatch and the 2km or so of not so sheer cliffs to the east of the above-mentioned little bay.

I couldn't find any reliable sources of cliff height. Here are four measurements from our GPS cellphone sitting on the cliff-top. Since the WA border is 129 east, and since the directions are very close to east-west from there, with the viewing platform at ~131.114 east, it is possible to calculate the distance east-west from the WA border of these measurements: Lat, Lon, Alt, km east of WA border:

-31.64254 129.35966 66m 34.1km -31.57398 130.24451 44m 118.1km -31.60641 130.75478 31m 166.6km -31.60702 130.76808 32m 167.8km

Plotting these gives a straight line within a metre or two. Extrapolating this 0.26m per km slope to the transition point at (I guess) 27km from the WA border gives about 68m +/- 1 metre or so. Next time we are there, I will do a proper job of this and measure the height near the transition point. Robin Whittle (talk) 12:15, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
