MOS:LINKONCE[edit]

Proposal to ignore MOS:LINKONCE. As per the style guide, "Other mentions may be linked if helpful, such as in ... tables" and "Duplicate linking ... is permissible if it significantly aids the reader ... and [the section] is expected to be parsed for particular bits of data, not read from top to bottom." This table list is not meant to be read word-for-word, top-to-bottom, but instead to be used as a look up table. If you are looking at the 2018-19 entry, for example, and want quick access to the Rimouski Oceanic page, it is not helpful to have to scroll up and down looking for the first entry of that team. @Flibirigituncleben85 (talk) 17:47, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support per MOS:LINKONCE Duplicate linking in stand-alone and embedded lists is permissible if it significantly aids the reader. This proposal does not ignore MOS:LINKONCE, but follows its outlined exception. Wracking talk! 18:44, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(following up on this: I think repeating links for the teams is good, links for leagues are unnecessary as this is covered in the lead) Wracking talk! 18:59, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think because there are only three choices for the leagues, personally I would prefer that the abbreviations be expanded in a legend with links, and omitting the links in the table. isaacl (talk) 18:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that teams need to be linked at all. The purpose of the list to highlight the player, not the team. Any navigation to a team's page can be linked through the player. Flibirigit (talk) 20:35, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree that the list's purpose is solely to highlight the player. I think (as evidenced by other similar tables such as the table of recipients at Hart Memorial Trophy) that providing context for the player's season by linking to the team page is appropriate. I also think it's reasonable to link each instance. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking § Duplicate and repeat links says Other mentions may be linked if helpful, such as in ... tables and Duplicate linking in stand-alone and embedded lists is permissible if it significantly aids the reader. This is most often the case when the list is presenting information that could just as aptly be formatted in a table, and is expected to be parsed for particular bits of data, not read from top to bottom. isaacl (talk) 20:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think not linking the teams at all is a bad idea. Per MOS:LINK, links are not meant to be used as emphasis (The purpose of linking is to clarify and to provide reasonable navigation opportunities, not to emphasize a particular word.) If you think the players aren't properly highlighted, I guess the way to fix that would be to have that column be set as a header column (!). I'm neutral on this proposition.
