Why does this article exist ?[edit]

HI

According to the article the school is now closed and I cannot find any details of population of this place

Shouldn't all those small hamlets be on one page for "Hamlets of Aberdeenshire" ?

You make a good point. We seem to have quite a lot of articles on insignificant places in Aberdeenshire, many of them just farms with a few cottages — not even worth calling hamlets. I removed the category Category:Villages in Aberdeenshire from a lot of these, but someone has been systematically putting it back again. Personally I would favour deleting most of them, perhaps not Cairnorrie though as there was a school until recently, there are ancient artifacts that might be worth covering, including the cairn from which it takes its name, as well as flint arrowheads and cremation urns that have been discovered there. In recent times there is the windfarm which could merit a mention. It's a borderline case though and hard to defend. --Deskford (talk) 21:26, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yup I spotted those - the Aberdeenshire link I came across had only four items of information on the "hamlet" and they were four finds.
It would be a shame to NOT include those lol, but I think an article for a larger area which incorporates them may be a better way of representation and if a redirect was left then it would not be a problem finding it in searches [1]
My father was in the prison camp near Lockerbie after WWII and one of the huts was converted in to a [2] church/chapel for them to use - it is still there. I wouldn't make an article about it - although.....lol

Perhaps any notable information about Cairnorrie could be merged into the article on Methlick, the closest village of any significance. --Deskford (talk) 21:47, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just took a look at the first 4 off the "Other settlements bar at the bottom of the page-
Auchterless Barthol Chapel Belhelvie Blackdog
Im pretty sure they could all fit on a small page

As with most things though it's usually a manpower thing - we had the same problem with villages of Norfolk. Each village wants it's own page and they are all pretty much the same - few houses, a cross in the middle with their name on, a map an info box and not really any substance - would take weeks of work to do them all for the four or five editors we have :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 22:01, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
At least the four you mention are thought of locally as villages. They have churches and schools and village halls (maybe Blackdog doesn't) and Belhelvie has recently grown to a substantial size (by Aberdeenshire standards). The ones I would have in my sights as not worthy of articles would include Ardonald, Ardoyne, Bainshole, Bonnykelly and Cairnleith Crofts, just to start at the beginning of the alphabet. --Deskford (talk) 22:30, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We had the same problem elsewhere e.g. Skye and the are are innumerable others in the Highland council area. Deleting them may not work well as someone with a gazetteer may simply re-create them. I'd suggest turning them into redirects to the nearest genuine settlement. If at some stage in future they become notable, the basic data can easily be retrieved.
