Wow, incredibly biased "development history" section[edit]

I'm quite confused by the Powder Mountain resort stuff. Can we please get some sources on some of this info? From my knowledge there was an attempted development in the 70's. They started logging for the resort. Then the guy split town without paying any of the loggers, causing an even bigger rivalry between Whistler and Squamish as the Squamish loggers had bad vibes for ski resorts in general. Many of the cut lines for the planned resort roads go through the sections with major old growth cedar. It seems like the whole resort was a plan to get some nice cedar for cheap. I had no knowledge of these other complications. So it would also be great to get sources on this info.

I have some private sources on that, as I know those developers....wasn't a guy, maybe that was a contractor they hired, or a previous effort than theirs; the archives of the VAncouver Sun which might have more were destroyed by the publisher in 1993, makes writing on nearly anything from the '80s and before really hard.....can't find stuff on Silvertip, for example. The affair involved senior politicians and bureaucrats, can't say much more because of WP:BLP for now.Skookum1 (talk) 09:47, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Split this article[edit]

This article needs to be split between Whistler Olympic Park, which redirects here, and the purely geographic article by this title that it should be. The Callaghan Valley has a history and geography independent of its existence as the site of an Olympics venue. The brochure/p.r. agency-like quality of this page isn't as bad as 2010 Winter Olympics but it betrays the same traits. I'll be back with material on the aborted Powder Mountain Resort and mines in the area, etc.....Skookum1 (talk) 03:08, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So long as Whistler Olympic Park doesn't have it's own article, then it appears this is the best place to redirect it. I agree that the two topics are independent of each other (though clearly there's a relation between them), but I don't think there's enough here to split the article, which would create two micro-stubs. If you can update the article on the valley, its history and geography, I'd fully support splitting off the Olympic Park portion. Mind matrix 16:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there you go for starters, see the edit comments if you haven't and note a couple of the hidden redlinks; I'll start the icefields list later today. My grammar/construction's clumsy in spots, was trying to "knit" into what was already there, gave it an emphasis on geography rather than the recreational bandwagon-flavour it had in its stub form; I imagine it needs a volcanic features cat - there's other lava flows and such in the valley - so will ask User:Black Tusk. It's not a gazetted capital-V Valley like some area in BCGNIS, so I'll use an approximate centre of the valley for its latlong; west of the falls somewhere, I'd guess. Re Powder Mtn cites - I know someone who'll provide weblinks/press cites; target article will be Powder Mountain Resort proposal (to go with Jumbo, Cayoosh, Canoe Mountain, which all have enough history and potential for revival to warrant articles at some point re {{Ski}} (WPSki). Not sure about kayaking, or wehther or not snowcats and snowmobiles are still allowed. Needs section headings, but will wait until after teh split to make them as some Olympics stuff is already in teh section before the Olympics one; do you wanna do the split or should I? [undent]Made the split, now it's the Olympic Park that's more of a stub than this one, as I myself knew would be the case as I knew how much there was about Callaghan Valley independent of its status as the loation of an Olympics venue. Whistler Olympic Village I linked in the split-off article and it eveidently needs an article, or maybe there's already one under another title that could be redirect to.....Skookum1 (talk) 17:15, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the near future I would like to add more info on some sections of the history of the valley. Including North Aire (sp) mines, as well as Mad River mountain lodge which started around 1984 and still opperates today in the northern section of the valley around conflict lake under the name Callaghan Country (www.callaghancountry.com) There was also a plane crash in the upper valley circa 1950´s of a world war 2 bomber, where I believe 2 pilots died, and there is a memorial at Alexander falls for the fallen men. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.139.60.218 (talk) 14:04, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Geography/development link[edit]

Tried looking up geology for Alexander Falls, which I suspect is formed by a lava ledge, been years since I was there though....and found this pdf from consultants reporting on site feasbility/geology/climate etc for the Olympics; it has geological and geographical information that could be incorporated here, as well as details on teh site of the Olympic Whistler Park, haven't read it yet, though did find that the geology section confirmed my suspicion that the Brandywine Lava Plateau is the same lava flow as found in the bottom of Callaghan Valley; doesn't say how old it is, though; guess it's from Callaghan or one of its vents anyway....so this is a volcanic feature, and I'll add the WP.Skookum1 (talk) 20:21, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
